Nigeria’s active mobile subscriptions rose to 171.3 million in August, driven by significant gains recorded by Airtel and MTN, according to the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).

Industry data shows subscriptions increased from 169 million in July. Airtel added 1.5 million new customers, bringing its total to 58 million, while MTN gained 499,540 to reach 89.6 million.

Globacom also grew by 173,244 to 20.9 million. However, T2 (formerly 9mobile) recorded no new additions, maintaining 2.7 million subscribers after a rebound in July.

With the new figures, MTN maintained market leadership with 52.31% share, followed by Airtel at 33.89%, Globacom at 12.21%, and T2 at 1.59%.

Nigeria’s teledensity rose to 79.14% in August, up from 78.11% in July, based on a population estimate of 216 million.
