ALTON Commence Harmonisation of Short Codes Across all Nigerian Networks

TECHDIGEST: The Association of Licensed Telecoms Operators of Nigeria (ALTON) has announced the start of the harmonisation of short codes across all networks in Nigeria. The initiative is in line with a regulatory modernisation program by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC). ALTON’s Chairman, Gbenga Adebayo, and Head of Operations, Gbolahan Awonuga, jointly signed the statement issued in Lagos.

This harmonisation process will create uniformity in shortcodes utilised by customers across all networks. For example, the code for recharging a line can be used across all mobile networks for the same purpose. Individual telco shortcodes and harmonised shortcodes will run concurrently for one year, after which the old codes will become inactive.

ALTON believes that the harmonisation of shortcodes will make life easier for Nigerians by providing a streamlined process for common shortcodes across the industry. This will also ensure consistency with global best practices while providing a cohesive regulatory framework.

The association stated that network operators have begun implementing the shortcodes, working closely with the NCC. The Commission has provided adequate time for subscribers to get used to this new development. ALTON is confident that the harmonisation of shortcodes will enhance the customer experience across all networks.

The migration process is expected to be concluded by May 17, 2023. During this time, old and new common codes will run concurrently, after which the old codes will cease to operate.
