Businesses Disrupted Globally as Microsoft Faces Technical Glitch

Businesses around the world have been significantly disrupted due to a series of technical glitches in Microsoft’s systems. Airlines, banks, and various other enterprises relying on Microsoft’s cloud infrastructure have faced operational challenges, particularly in the US and Asia.

Reports from social media indicate that employees globally have been unable to work as their Windows systems refused to power up, displaying blue screens with the message, “Your PC ran into a problem and needs to restart.” Social media platforms are flooded with images of these error screens as users struggle to start their computers.

Despite these widespread issues, checks by TechDigest reveal that businesses in Nigeria remain unaffected, with Microsoft services operating normally in the country at the time of reporting.

Bloomberg reported on Friday that major companies such as McDonald’s Corp., United Airlines Holdings Inc., and the London Stock Exchange (LSE) Group have disclosed various communication issues with customer service.

KLM, for instance, has suspended most flights due to a global computer outage. Numerous corporations from Japan to India and the US have also reported operational glitches. The exact cause of these issues remains unclear but coincides with the Microsoft disruptions.

Further reports indicate that some of the problems may stem from CrowdStrike Holdings Inc. cybersecurity software. Australia’s AGL Energy Ltd. confirmed experiencing system issues due to a CrowdStrike outage in a post on X.

Microsoft spokesperson stated that the company is investigating the situation.

CrowdStrike representatives were not immediately available for comment outside regular business hours, and attempts to reach their main office in Japan were unsuccessful.

“We’re continuing to progress on our mitigation efforts for the affected Microsoft 365 apps and services. We still expect users to see remediation as we address residual impact,” Microsoft stated in its latest status update.

The initial glitches emerged in the US late on Thursday, attributed to failures in Microsoft services, including Azure and 365. Frontier Airlines, a unit of Frontier Group Holdings Inc., grounded flights for over two hours but later resumed operations around 11 p.m. New York time.

The LSE Group reported a global technical issue preventing news publication. In Asia, users in Japan began experiencing problems with Microsoft 365 in the afternoon.

Airports in Mumbai, Narita, Singapore, and Hong Kong had to switch to manual passenger check-ins.

These disruptions followed shortly after Microsoft announced it had resolved an Azure cloud services outage, with status pages showing issues with Azure and Microsoft 365 persisting for several hours.
