OpenAI’s ChatGPT has returned to double-digit monthly growth, according to an internal message from CEO Sam Altman, as competition intensifies in the fast-moving artificial intelligence market.

Altman told employees that ChatGPT is once again growing at more than 10% month-on-month and that the company is preparing to launch an updated chat model this week, CNBC reported on Monday.

The startup, which has more than 800 million weekly active users, did not immediately respond to requests for comment, and Reuters could not independently verify the report.

OpenAI and rival AI firms such as Anthropic and Google are stepping up competition for users and enterprise customers. Google said its Gemini app exceeded 750 million monthly active users by the end of the December quarter.

Altman also said OpenAI’s coding product, Codex, grew by about 50% in the past week. Codex competes directly with Anthropic’s Claude Code, as demand for AI-assisted software development tools accelerates.

Last week, OpenAI launched a new coding model, GPT-5.3-Codex, as it expands its product lineup and looks to monetise ChatGPT through advertising in select markets to offset rising development costs.
