A federal district court in Northern California has ruled in favor of Cameo, the celebrity video messaging platform, ordering OpenAI to stop using the “Cameo” name for its AI-powered video generation feature, previously called Sora 2.

The court found that the use of “Cameo” could cause user confusion, rejecting OpenAI’s argument that the term was descriptive. Following a temporary restraining order in November, OpenAI renamed the feature to “Characters.”

Cameo CEO Steven Galanis said the ruling protects the integrity of the marketplace and the creators who trust the brand. OpenAI maintains it disagrees with the assertion of exclusive ownership over the name and plans to continue its legal challenge.
