Elon Musk’s X Hikes Premium+ Subscription by 51% in Nigeria
Elon Musk’s social media platform, X, has announced a significant increase in the subscription price for its Premium+ plan globally, with Nigeria seeing one of the steepest hikes at 51%.
Nigerian users will now pay ₦34,000 per month for the ad-free Premium+ plan, up from ₦22,550. In comparison, U.S. subscribers will experience a 37.5% rise, with the plan increasing from $16 to $22. Similarly, European Union users will pay €21, up from €16, while Canadians will see rates climb 45% to $29 from $20.
X disclosed that the new pricing took effect on December 21, 2024, for new subscribers. Existing subscribers will continue to pay the old rate until their next billing cycle, provided it begins before January 20, 2025.
“Prices may vary by location, applicable taxes, and your payment method’s fees,” the company stated.
Rationale for the Increase
Explaining the reason behind the price adjustment, X highlighted several enhancements to the Premium+ plan:
Ad-Free Experience: Premium+ now offers a completely ad-free browsing experience, a feature the company says justifies the price hike.
Enhanced Features: Subscribers will benefit from higher priority customer support, early access to features like Radar, and expanded limits on X’s advanced Grok AI models.
Creator Support: The new pricing model also supports X’s evolving creator program. X stated that user subscriptions now contribute more directly to creator earnings, shifting away from ad impressions to rewarding quality content and engagement.
“Your Premium+ subscription fee contributes to this new, more equitable system where creator earnings are tied to the overall value they bring to X, not impressions of ads,” the company noted.
Despite the Premium+ hike, the standard Premium subscription remains unchanged at ₦3,650 per month or ₦38,500 annually in Nigeria.
