Tesla and X Corp. executive Elon Musk says rapid advancements in artificial intelligence and robotics could make traditional employment optional within the next two decades. Musk made the comments during a conversation with Zerodha co-founder Nikhil Kamath on the People by WTF podcast, released Sunday.

“My prediction is that, in the future, working will be optional,” Musk said, suggesting AI systems could eventually handle nearly all production and service roles. “In less than 20 years — maybe even 10 or 15 — advances in AI and robotics will bring us to a point where working is optional.”

Musk argued that future technology could provide goods and services at minimal effort, likening it to choosing between cultivating vegetables at home or purchasing them in a store. He added that while manual work may still appeal to some, it would no longer be a necessity for economic survival.

The billionaire has repeatedly highlighted AI’s transformative potential, while also warning about associated risks in the past. His latest comments reflect a sharp shift in how global leaders view the future of labor as automation accelerates.
