The U.S. Embassy in Nigeria has announced a suspension of routine updates on its official X (formerly Twitter) account following a partial shutdown of the U.S. government.

In a statement released on Wednesday, October 1, the Embassy said the pause was a result of a “lapse in appropriations,” the diplomatic phrase for when Congress fails to pass a budget or temporary funding bill. The impasse has forced many U.S. government operations to scale back.

“Due to the lapse in appropriations, this X account will not be updated regularly until full operations resume, with the exception of urgent safety and security information,” the Embassy said.

The Embassy clarified that while public communication would be limited, consular operations—including passport and visa services—remain functional “as the situation permits.” Applicants in Nigeria are expected to continue with scheduled appointments, though the statement did not rule out possible delays if the shutdown persists.

The suspension of updates applies to U.S. embassies worldwide. Similar notices have been issued by U.S. missions in the United Kingdom and other countries.

The shutdown marks yet another chapter in America’s long history of budgetary standoffs. Political gridlock in Washington has led to several shutdowns over the past decades, often disrupting federal services and affecting millions of Americans. This latest impasse has again seen Republicans and Democrats trading blame over spending priorities.
