Equinix, the global data centre operator that acquired MainOne, has announced plans to build a new $22 million facility in Lagos — its first newly constructed data centre in West Africa.

The new facility, named LG3, will serve both local and international companies looking to scale into Nigeria, with operations scheduled to begin in the first quarter of 2026. The project marks the start of Equinix’s $100 million investment strategy aimed at expanding Africa’s digital infrastructure over the next two years.

Lagos, which has over 18 million internet subscribers and accounts for more than 30% of Nigeria’s data centre market, is a key hub for fintechs, telecom operators, and subsea cable systems.

“Lagos is emerging at the crossroads of talent, innovation, and global connectivity,” said Wole Abu, Equinix’s Managing Director for West Africa. “This facility will accelerate access to technologies like cloud and AI.”

The LG3 data centre will feature Equinix Fabric®, enabling interconnection with more than 270 data centres globally. It is part of a wider expansion plan that includes a new Port Harcourt data centre, PR1, set to host Meta’s 2Africa subsea cable.

Equinix entered West Africa in 2022 after its $320 million acquisition of MainOne. Other major data centre investors in Nigeria include MTN, Airtel, and Open Access Data Centres, all of which are investing heavily to power the country’s growing digital economy.
