FG Launches Investigation into Alleged Data Breach by OPay, Meta, DHL
The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) has initiated an investigation into Fintech firm OPay, social media giant Meta, and courier company DHL over allegations of a data breach.Sources familiar with the matter revealed that the NDPC has summoned these companies following complaints lodged against them, accusing them of violating the data rights of individuals.
Under the Nigeria Data Protection Act, these three companies are considered data controllers and are obligated to adhere to specific data protection measures while handling the personal data of Nigerians.
If found guilty, each company may face penalties amounting to 2% of their gross revenue, as outlined in the Data Protection Act.

OPay may face inquiries regarding allegations of opening bank accounts for data subjects without their consent, a serious breach of data privacy rights for an estimated 40 million data subjects. Each of these data controllers has been served with a Notice of Investigation by the Nigeria Data Protection Commission.
