FG Launches N5 Million AI Research Scheme
The Federal Government has initiated the Nigeria Artificial Intelligence Research Scheme, aiming to grant N5 million to each of 45 startups and researchers who are committed to advancing the field of Artificial Intelligence.
Dr. Bosun Tijani, the Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, made the announcement of the scheme’s launch and the commencement of applications on Friday.
He expressed that the primary goal of the program is to promote the widespread adoption of Artificial Intelligence for economic growth, with the N5 million grant intended to facilitate the enhancement of projects by startups and researchers for the betterment of the nation’s economy.
Dr. Tijani took to X to unveil the scheme, stating, “We’ve introduced the Nigeria Artificial Intelligence Research Scheme to financially support 45 consortia of startups and researchers, enabling them to further expand their work and establish a sustainable AI ecosystem within Nigeria.”
He extended an invitation to AI researchers and startups to apply for grants of up to N5 million.

The Minister emphasized that this initiative serves as a foundational step in the Ministry’s efforts to drive innovation, bolster productivity in critical sectors, and position Nigeria as a global hub for AI technology application.
The scheme’s website outlines various areas of focus, including Agriculture, Education, Finance, Governance, Healthcare, Utility, and Sustainability.
Eligibility Criteria
To qualify for the grant, applicants must form a consortium that includes a startup or technology company, a Nigerian academic researcher, or a foreign researcher.
They must craft a research proposal aligning with the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy’s AI priority areas and provide a comprehensive project description outlining its potential impact on the Nigerian economy.
Applicants should have a proven track record of excellence in either research or entrepreneurship and commit to publishing at least one peer-reviewed article within one year of receiving the grant.
Application Process
The application window is open from October 13, 2023, to November 15, 2023, with all submissions required to be made through the designated online portal.
The proposals will undergo evaluation by a panel of AI experts, and shortlisted candidates will receive email notifications and invitations for interviews.
