Google Sets New Rules for AI-Generated Election Ads to Boost Transparency
Google, the global search giant, is taking proactive steps to address the rise of AI-generated content in election advertising and combat misinformation.
In preparation for the 2024 U.S. presidential election, the company has unveiled plans to enforce stringent disclosure rules for verified election advertisers.
This pivotal move aims to enhance transparency during political campaigns, as reported by Forbes. Google’s updated policy, slated for implementation in mid-November, will require election advertisers to include “clear and conspicuous” disclosures on all forms of content, including images, videos, and audio, if the content is generated by AI.

Notably, the disclosure mandate will exclude AI-generated content that is deemed “inconsequential to the claims made in the ad.”
This exemption covers tasks like color corrections, image resizing, and cropping.Crucially, these new rules extend to political campaigns posting videos on YouTube if they are paid advertisements.
However, videos that are not part of paid advertising, even if uploaded by political campaigns, will remain unaffected by this regulation. To run election ads on Google, advertisers already undergo a verification process that collects essential information.
The enforcement of these new disclosure rules will rely on a combination of human oversight and technological tools to maintain the integrity of the platform during election periods.
