Google Loses Case to Fortnite Maker Epic Games

TECH DIGEST- The creator of the popular video game Fortnite, Epic Games, emerged victorious in its legal battle against Google, with a jury ruling that the tech giant had engaged in an illegal monopoly. The lawsuit, initiated by Epic Games in 2020, accused Google of unfairly establishing its app store dominance, impacting competitors in the market.

The core of Epic Games’ case centred around Google allegedly unlawfully solidifying its app store as the dominant platform, creating an environment that hindered competition. The app store, utilized by hundreds of millions for installing apps on Google’s Android-powered smartphones, came under scrutiny for its alleged anti-competitive practices.

Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney announced that work on remedies would commence in January, signifying potential changes in the dynamics of app store ecosystems. The ruling has the potential to reshape the relationships between app developers, platforms, and consumers, opening avenues for increased competition and a more level playing field.
