Google has introduced a major AI upgrade to Google Photos, powered by Gemini’s latest on-device model known as Nano Banana. The update, which is already rolling out and will expand to more users in the coming weeks, brings new creative editing tools, personalised adjustments, and improved search capabilities.
The Photos editor now supports a wider range of AI-assisted transformations. By selecting “Help me edit,” users can request stylistic changes such as Renaissance-style portraits, storybook illustrations, or colourful mosaics.
Google is also adding a new “Create with AI” section to the Create tab on Android for users in the U.S. and India. The feature includes ready-made templates for generating images such as high-fashion portraits and professional headshots. Personalised templates will launch in the U.S. in the coming weeks, using insights from a user’s photo library.
The update introduces more precise photo fixes, including the ability to open closed eyes, adjust smiles, or remove sunglasses. These edits are powered by face-group data in users’ libraries to maintain accuracy.
A new “Ask” button allows users to search their photo library using natural language queries or request custom edits. On iOS, users can now describe edits via voice or text, with a redesigned editor offering gesture controls and one-tap suggestions.
Google has also expanded Ask Photos to 17 new languages and over 100 additional countries, improving global accessibility to its AI-powered search features.
