Huawei has introduced a new foldable smartphone, the Pura X Max, positioning it as the industry’s first device to feature a horizontally “wide” foldable display.
The launch places Huawei ahead of major competitors such as Apple and Samsung, both of which are reportedly preparing similar devices for release later this year.
Unlike most foldable smartphones that expand into near-square tablet displays, the Pura X Max adopts a wider aspect ratio, resembling the form factor of a compact tablet. Images shared by Huawei show a short, wide device with a triple rear camera setup, minimal screen crease and colour options including white, orange and purple.
The design is intended to improve media consumption by offering a more natural viewing experience with fewer black bars when watching videos or reading content. However, the wider build may also make the device bulkier and less comfortable to hold compared to slimmer foldables.
Huawei has not yet released full technical specifications but confirmed that additional details will be unveiled on April 21. The device is already available for pre-order in China.
Industry analysts say the move reflects a broader trend among smartphone manufacturers to explore new form factors as the global handset market becomes increasingly saturated. Rival devices expected from Apple and Samsung are also anticipated to adopt similar wide-screen designs, targeting premium users seeking enhanced display experiences.
