TECHDIGEST – Digital African Youth Forum (DAYFORUM) has called for renewed value orientation and digital inclusion of the girl child, as a way to secure their rights and get them prepared for a brighter future.
These were the focus at a mentorship session organized by the National coordinator of DAYFORUM, Abbas Badamasi, in commemoration of the International Day of the Girl Child, held at the ‘girls only’ Queen Elizabeth School, Ilorin.
In her welcome address, Issa said “The theme of the 2022 Int’l Day of the Girl Child (IDG) is broad, complex and heavily pregnant, especially in the realm of Nigeria’s girl child day-to-day experiences.
However, she noted that the girl child’s time seems to be passing without taking productive advantage of it. Their rights are daily being trampled upon, while in other instances, they are trading off their rights for pecuniary gains, which exposes their future to serious threat if critical steps aren’t taken to nip the surge of the antisocial and exploitative economic tendencies against the girl child in the bud.

“While the focus of the founding mothers of IDG is for advocacy amongst governments, policymakers and the general public, to create more opportunities for girls to have their voices heard on the global stage, it is important that we don’t lose focus on the baking process of the girl child, so they can actually grow to be a truly strong voice without excess moral baggages and social decadence.
“Notwithstanding the common vices against girl child such as violence, child labor, trafficking and child marriage among others, there is a growing concern over the kind of values our girls child are growing up to admire and the kind of models they are exposed to, which shapes their interests in leadership or whatever productive venture that can make their voice truly and unquestionably strong on the global stage”, emphasizing that “the girl child strength of character have strong implications on their leadership prowess”.
She also noted that there is a critical need for the girl child to tap into opportunities in information and communication technology (ICT), which is the new crude, In a bid to readily prepare the girl child to take advantage of their time, know and preserve their own social, legal and economic rights and prepare them to be a stronger voice for the future.
In her presentation, Ms. Rukayat Shittu, APC candidate for Owode/Onire state constituency encouraged the girls child to maintain strong focus on their education and show interest in leadership and community services at whatever level they find themselves, when opportune.
Also speaking on girl child value reorientation, the Founder of Tamirah Wellbeing Foundation, Mrs. Rukayat Yahyah who noted the need to continue impacting the younger generation to become better women of tomorrow said “It was imperative for females to nurture their integrity right from childhood, hence, the need to refrain from any conduct capable of weakening their character, soiling their images or objectifying womanhood.”
For his part, Yahyah Dunmoye, Project Director of KidsTech Africa emphasized the need for girls child to acquire tech skills as it will add great value to whatever career endeavor they wish to pursue in future.
The Association also announced partnership with an IT initiative, KIDSTECH AFRICA to offer scholarships to 20 participants for digital training.
