Italy’s competition authority has widened its investigation into Meta, citing concerns that new WhatsApp Business terms and AI-powered tools could stifle competition in the chatbot services market.

In a statement Wednesday, regulator AGCM said Meta’s expanded AI features and updated Business Solution terms — introduced October 15 — may restrict innovation, market access and technical development for rivals.

The authority also warned that interim measures may be considered if necessary. Meta has not yet commented.

The probe first opened in July over concerns that Meta integrated its AI assistant into WhatsApp without sufficient user consent, a potential violation of EU competition rules.
