ITU Reports 6% 5G Coverage in Nigeria, Other Countries
International Telecommunications Union, ITU, reports that 5G coverage in Nigeria and other African nations remains the lowest globally at just six percent, according to its ‘Mobile Network Coverage Facts and Figures 2023’ report.
While 4G has a 58 percent coverage, 3G stands at 19 percent, and 2G at 10 percent across the continent.

The ITU highlights Africa’s lag in network adoption, with global 5G at 38 percent and 4G at 52 percent. The challenge in some countries stems from the continued presence of 2G and 3G networks, hindering 5G deployment due to infrastructure costs, device affordability, and regulatory barriers.
The UN telecommunications body notes that 5G coverage reached 40 percent of the world population in 2023, with significant disparities between high-income and low-income countries.
Europe leads with 68 percent coverage, followed by the Americas (59 percent) and Asia-Pacific (42 percent), while Africa lags at six percent. Despite recent 5G rollout in Sub-Saharan Africa, Ericsson predicts that 4G will dominate until 2028, constituting half of all mobile subscriptions by the end of 2029
