Meta Platforms is laying off hundreds of employees across multiple divisions as part of an ongoing restructuring tied to its growing focus on artificial intelligence.
The job cuts are expected to affect teams in recruiting, sales, social media operations, and the company’s Reality Labs division, which develops virtual reality and augmented reality technologies.
A company spokesperson said the layoffs are part of broader organisational changes aimed at aligning resources with strategic priorities. The spokesperson added that efforts are being made to redeploy affected employees into other roles where possible.
The move reflects Meta’s increasing investment in AI infrastructure, including data centres, advanced chips, and machine learning systems.
Reality Labs, once central to the company’s metaverse ambitions, has seen significant downsizing in recent months. Earlier this year, Meta cut at least 1,000 jobs in the division and shut down several virtual reality studios.
The company has also scaled back initiatives related to workplace metaverse tools and reduced development on certain VR applications.
Meta’s pivot comes amid intensifying competition in the AI sector, as major technology firms accelerate investments in generative AI and automation technologies.
