Meta has rolled out a new suite of artificial intelligence features on Facebook, allowing users to animate profile pictures, redesign old photos in Stories and Memories, and add moving backgrounds to text posts.
The update is part of the company’s broader push to make Facebook more visually engaging as competition intensifies across social media platforms.
Animated profile pictures
One of the headline features enables users to convert static profile photos into short animated clips using preset motion effects. Instead of uploading a video, users can apply animation styles such as “natural,” “party hat,” “confetti,” “wave,” and “heart” to a still image.
Meta said the feature works best with a clear photo of a single person facing the camera, with the face fully visible and unobstructed. The company added that more animation styles will be introduced over time.
Restyling old photos
Facebook users can also refresh older photos shared in Stories or Memories through a new “Restyle” button. The tool allows users to type in specific changes or select preset themes.
Images can be transformed into styles such as anime or low-poly designs, giving users a way to update older content without using third-party editing apps.
Animated backgrounds for text posts
Text-only posts are also receiving an upgrade. Users can tap an “A” icon displayed over a rainbow background while composing a post to access a menu of static and animated background designs.
Meta said the feature is designed to help text updates stand out in feeds increasingly dominated by video and image content.
The rollout aligns with CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s broader effort to revive what he has described as “OG Facebook,” with a renewed focus on friends and meaningful connections. Last year, the company introduced a friends-only feed aimed at reducing algorithm-driven content.
