Meta has introduced a new artificial intelligence-powered translation tool designed to help creators connect with audiences across different languages.

The feature, rolled out on Tuesday, automatically dubs and lip-syncs Reels into another language while preserving the creator’s voice and tone. According to Meta, the system not only translates speech but also adjusts lip movements to match the translated audio, making it appear as though the creator is speaking in the new language.

“With Meta AI translations, you can speak to viewers in their own language, opening up your content to new audiences that may not have found it accessible before,” the company said in a statement.

The service currently supports English-to-Spanish and Spanish-to-English translations, with more languages expected in the coming months. Access is limited to Facebook creators with at least 1,000 followers and all public Instagram accounts.

Activating the feature on Facebook is done by clicking “Translate your voice with Meta AI” before publishing a Reel. Creators can choose whether to enable lip syncing, preview translations, and decide at any point to remove them. Once published, viewers automatically see Reels in their preferred language, and creators gain access to insights showing how many views came from each translated version.

Meta advised creators to use the tool with clear, face-to-camera videos, minimal background noise, and no overlapping speech for best results. It also announced an additional option for Facebook creators to upload up to 20 pre-recorded dubbed audio tracks to Reels via the “Closed captions and translations” section of the Meta Business Suite, enabling creators to expand audiences beyond English- and Spanish-speaking markets.

Instagram head Adam Mosseri said the feature was designed to help creators build communities across cultural and linguistic barriers. “If we can help you reach audiences who speak other languages, we can help you grow your following and get more value out of Instagram and the platform,” he explained.

The launch comes at a time when Meta is expanding support for creators globally. In July 2024, the company made Nigerian creators eligible for content monetization through In-Stream Ads on Facebook and Ads on Reels. To qualify for in-stream ads, creators must meet requirements such as having at least 5,000 followers.
