MTN Nigeria Communications Plc has secured approval from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to lease spectrum from T2 Mobile Limited, formerly known as 9Mobile, beginning October 1, 2025.

Under the three-year agreement, MTN will lease 5MHz frequency in the 900MHz band and 15MHz in the 1800MHz band. The arrangement is expected to complement MTN’s national roaming partnership with T2, enabling the company to absorb increased network traffic from T2 customers using its infrastructure.

Karl Toriola, CEO of MTN Nigeria, described the deal as part of the company’s Ambition 2025 strategy to deliver high-quality connectivity in a sustainable manner. He added that the agreement strengthens collaboration in the telecom sector and expands broadband access to support Nigeria’s digital transformation.

MTN also confirmed that it will not renew its existing lease with Natcom Development and Investment Ltd (Ntel), which expires in November 2025.

The announcement comes as T2 Mobile recorded its first subscriber gain of the year in July, adding 290,601 users after months of decline. Despite this growth, the operator remains the smallest among Nigeria’s four major telcos, holding just 1.61% market share compared to MTN’s dominant 52.7%.
