Telecom giant MTN Nigeria has confirmed network disruptions affecting parts of Lagos State, leaving many customers unable to make calls, access data, or complete mobile transactions.

In a message to subscribers on Sunday evening, the company said:
“Dear Customer, we’re experiencing network challenges in some parts of Lagos State, and our services may be temporarily unavailable as a result. Our engineers are working to restore services as soon as possible. Thank you for your patience and understanding.”

The notice followed a surge of complaints on social media, particularly on X (formerly Twitter), where subscribers tagged MTN to demand updates on the outage.

Connectivity issues have become increasingly common in Nigeria, with poor infrastructure, vandalism, and rising energy costs often affecting telecom services. Lagos, as the nation’s commercial hub, is particularly vulnerable given the heavy reliance of businesses and individuals on mobile voice and data services.

MTN, the country’s largest telecom operator with over 80 million subscribers (about 38% market share), has invested heavily in network expansion and 5G rollouts. However, service interruptions persist, often due to fiber cuts, power supply disruptions, or technical glitches.

Earlier this year, telecom operators, under the Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria (ALTON), secured regulatory approval for tariff increases, citing inflation, rising diesel costs, and network congestion as challenges. Despite the upward adjustment, Nigerians continue to experience frequent service disruptions, raising questions about the impact of higher charges on service quality.

MTN said its engineers are already working to restore services, though no timeline has been provided for full resolution.
