NCC: Governors to Convene for Broadband Awareness Conference

TECH DIGEST- At the inaugural Broadband Technical Awareness Forum for Governors (BTAF), organized by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and scheduled for Thursday in Abuja, all Nigerian state governors will discuss ways to empower the populace with cutting-edge telecoms technologies. The programme, which takes place at the Congress Hall of the Transcorp Hilton, Hotel in Abuja on October 20, 2022, and themed: “State Broadband Coordinating Councils: Potentials and Possibilities”, will appraise the Nigerian National Broadband Plan (NNBP) 2020-2025, which targets 70 per cent broadband penetration and to cover 90 per cent of the population.

Some key members of the State Executive Council, telecom operators, infrastructure companies (InfraCos), strategic partners, investors, and other crucial stakeholders will convene under the patronage of the Nigerian Governors Forum (NGF), with Prof. Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami, Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, as host, to discuss how Nigeria can meet the goals of its digital economy.

Participants in the NCC Board of Directors, led by the Chairman, Prof. Adeolu Akande, and the Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer (EVC/CEO) of the Commission, Prof. Umar Danbatta, will attend the BTAF, whose main goal is to encourage the establishment of State Structures necessary for sustainable broadband infrastructure development at the State and Local Government Council levels, thereby addressing obstacles to the Federal Government’s drive to achieve universal broadband access.

The Forum is anticipated to reaffirm the government’s commitment to implementing last-mile projects and broadband infrastructure, particularly the financial viability of broadband deployments outside of urban areas, with a strategic focus on funding models and procedures for notable and quantifiable impact. The Governors and partners with a global and local focus on development will participate in a special panel discussion.
