The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) has issued a security advisory warning Google Chrome users of multiple vulnerabilities that could allow hackers to take control of devices.
The advisory, shared on the Commission’s official X handle, noted that the most severe of the flaws could enable attackers to execute arbitrary code on a system, potentially gaining full access without consent.
“If exploited, these vulnerabilities could allow attackers to install programs, view or delete data, or create new accounts with full administrative rights,” the Commission stated.
Users were urged to immediately update Google Chrome, avoid operating under administrative rights unless necessary, and exercise caution when opening suspicious links or attachments.
The warning comes as NDPC continues to expand its data protection oversight. According to National Commissioner Dr. Vincent Olatunji, the agency is investigating 17 major data breach cases across multiple sectors, with over 1,000 complaints received last year. Verified cases have already generated more than ₦400 million in government revenue.
Nigeria has also gained membership in the Global Privacy Assembly and remains an active participant in the Network of African Data Protection Authorities, underscoring its growing role in global data protection efforts.
