Netflix steps into Kenyan market with free streaming plan
TECHDIGEST – Netflix is set to launch a free mobile plan in Kenya, spreading its reach across Africa.
Although the free plan comes with limited content and doesn’t give users the liberty to download titles for offline viewing or allow casting to connected TVs, Netflix wants Kenyans to experience its service and upgrade to paid plans if they would love to.
“This is a great way to experience our service,” Cathy Conk, director of product innovation at Netflix, wrote in a blog post. “And if you like what you see, it’s easy to upgrade to one of our paid plans so you can enjoy our full catalogue on your TV or laptop as well.”
Available on Android phones to users within the age of 18 and above, Kenyans would not be required to provide any form of payment information when signing up. All they need to do is enter an email address and create a password.

“Then you can sit back and watch many of Netflix’s most popular series and films, as well as enjoy our personalised recommendations, parental controls, and profiles, including kids,” Conk wrote.
The streaming company, Netflix, is currently available in over 190 countries and has carried out several remarkable plans to increase its customer base across developing markets.
The company has done a campaign in India with a no-charge service and tested a $3 mobile-only plan in the country in 2018.
Although the length of time for Kenyans to enjoy the new service, which will soon become active in a few weeks, wasn’t stated, neither was the extension of the offering to other countries made known, Netflix is carrying out research to figure out how to best attract users, improving its reach globally.
Netflix, which currently has over 200,000,000 subscribers, is still on a mission to increase this number. Its competitive drive stands as a firm innovator in helping the company thrive.
