NIGCOMSAT Set To Reward Innovation In Space Technology
TECH DIGEST – The Nigeria Communication Satellite is set to reward Nigerians for innovation in space technology at the nationals of the ACTINSPACE Innovation Contest.
A statement by the General Manager, Corporate Affairs, NIGCOMSAT, Adamu Idris, described ACTINSPACE as an international competition targeted at students of tertiary institutions, IT start-ups and entrepreneurs to utilise space technologies to create solutions that improve everyday life.
He said the nationals would be in the form of a hackathon, where the successful participants would work in teams over a 24-hour period to develop marketable solutions to national and global issues through the use of space technologies.

According to him, ACTINSPACE is being organised this year in collaboration with NIGCOMSAT; Federal Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy; African Aeronautics and Space Organisation; National Centre for Space Studies- France; European Space Agency; Airbus and others.
Idris said the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr Isa Pantami, would declare the event open while the Managing Director of NIGCOMSAT, Abimbola Alale, would be the host.
He explained that hackathon would provide the finalists an opportunity to fine-tune their proposed solutions, and create indigenous solutions to global challenges.
According to him, finalists and runners up will emerge at the end of the hackathon in which the first place winner will represent Nigeria at the global ACTINSPACE event in Paris, France in 2021.
The Local Organising Committee Chairperson, Alma Okpalefe, expressed optimism about the competition.
He said, “We are so pleased with the excellence, commitment and obvious talent of the national participants, and are expecting to see Nigeria win the global ACTINSPACE challenge in 2021.”
