The Federal Government of Nigeria and the Government of Finland have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on digitalisation and innovation, with a strong focus on cybersecurity collaboration.

The agreement was signed on March 23 in Abuja by Nigeria’s Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr Bosun Tijani, and Finland’s Under-Secretary of State for International Trade, Jarno Syrjälä.

According to a statement issued by the ministry, the MoU is aimed at strengthening cooperation in key areas including digital government, emerging technologies, digital public infrastructure, cybersecurity, innovation ecosystems, and capacity building.

The ministry said the partnership reflects the shared ambition of both countries to leverage digital transformation to drive sustainable economic growth, improve public service delivery, and promote inclusive innovation.

Speaking on the development, Tijani described the agreement as a major step in deepening bilateral relations and advancing Nigeria’s digital economy agenda.

He noted that the MoU builds on earlier engagements held in Helsinki, where discussions focused on digital infrastructure, data exchange platforms, and opportunities for Finnish participation in Nigeria’s Project BRIDGE initiative.

Tijani expressed confidence that the partnership would unlock new opportunities for both countries and support efforts to build a resilient and inclusive digital economy.

On his part, Syrjälä said Finland is committed to supporting Nigeria in developing secure and human-centric digital systems.

He added that Nigeria remains a key partner for Finland in Africa, noting that the agreement provides a framework for collaboration between governments, institutions, and private sector players in both countries.

The ministry further disclosed that the MoU aligns with ongoing cooperation under the European Union’s Team Europe Initiative, which supports digital public services and digital skills development in Nigeria.
