Nigeria to Harness Nuclear Technology for Electricity Generation

The Nigeria Atomic Energy Commission (NAEC) has announced a groundbreaking collaboration with the Centre for Energy Research and Training (CERT) at Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, aimed at leveraging nuclear science and technology to bolster electric power generation in Nigeria.

Speaking at the 20th Anniversary Symposium of Nigeria’s first Nuclear Research Reactor-1 (NNR-1) in Zaria, Prof. Yusuf-Aminu Ahmed, Chairman of NAEC, revealed plans to transition the country into the next phase of power generation through the deployment of nuclear reactors.

Prof. Ahmed emphasized President Bola Tinubu’s directive to explore avenues for enhancing Nigeria’s clean energy landscape, with nuclear energy poised to play a significant role.

While he noted that the project timeline remains undisclosed to the public, he highlighted the involvement of international partners and vendors, underscoring the strategic alliances forged to facilitate the initiative.

Additionally, he hinted at imminent announcements from President Tinubu regarding the nuclear power project.

Sen. George Akume, representing the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, lauded Nigeria’s commitment to the safe application of nuclear energy, citing the 20 years of incident-free operation of the nuclear research reactor as a testament to the nation’s readiness for electricity generation through nuclear means.

He reiterated President Tinubu’s endorsement of nuclear energy as a clean and secure power source, notwithstanding historical incidents like those in Hiroshima.

Meanwhile, Prof. Sunday Jonah, Director of the center, highlighted the achievements of the past two decades in operating the NNR-1 safely.

However, he expressed concerns about the proposed NAEC Bill 2022, which threatens to undermine the center’s autonomy within the university framework, potentially impeding its research and development objectives.

As Nigeria charts its course towards nuclear-powered electricity generation, stakeholders anticipate significant strides in the nation’s energy sector, underpinned by cutting-edge scientific advancements and strategic partnerships.
