‘In 13 Years, NIMC Enrolled a Paltry 39m Citizens for NIN’

TECHDIGEST – The Minister of Communication and Digital Economy, Prof Isa Ali Pantami, has disclosed that upon his appointment as Minister, the National Identity Management Commission, NIMC, has successfully captured over 91 million Nigerians for the National Identity Number, NIN.
He said the 91 million citizens were enrolled in three years, between 2019 and 2022, as against the 39 million registered in 12 years, between 2007 and 2019.
Pantami stated this at the ongoing Digital Innovation and Entrepreneurship Conference in Abuja.

He said: “NIMC was created in 2007, that was 15 years ago. On my appointment, I requested for the update and realized that the agency had only captured 39 million Nigerians.
“So we had to restrategize with little funds. But still, we pushed all we could to speed up the registration process and today we are proud to achieve about 91 million registered Nigerians”.
Speaking on digital inclusion and literacy in the country, Pantami stated that 823,200 000 Nigerians have been trained on cutting edge digital skills, with Google promising to train 5million Nigerians in higher tech skills.
While soliciting for better partnership with sister Ministries and other stakeholders in the nation’s ICT sector, Pantami urged: “We must work together as Nigerians for Nigerians”.
