NITDA: Advancing E-Learning in the Face of Economic Downturn

By Fom Gyem

The non-stop, serial increment in the pump price of fuel is gradually taking transportation costs out of the reach of ordinary Nigerians. Students are mostly affected by the chaotic economic situation of the country as they can no longer afford to attend classes physically.

In the light of these challenges, online learning presents a viable solution. The COVID-19 pandemic we suffered a few years ago demonstrated the effectiveness and accessibility of online education, and with advancements in technology, it is now more feasible than ever. Technology has massively developed since the pandemic and will make learning online seamless. In this economic situation, these are the benefits of adopting e-learning

Affordability: Online learning eliminates the need for transportation, significantly reducing student costs.

Flexibility: Students can learn at their own pace and schedule, making it easier to balance education with other commitments.

Accessibility: Online learning can bridge the gap between rural and urban areas, providing equal educational opportunities for all.

Safety: Online learning reduces the risk of exposure to diseases and accidents during physical commuting.

While online learning offers many more benefits, it is essential to address potential challenges especially in Nigeria as a developing country. Issues such as internet connectivity, lack of access to devices, and teacher training must be resolved to ensure the success of online education programs. Parents and guardians can make provision for gadgets with internet access, it must not be anything expensive as long as their wards can access the internet and they won’t miss out on class.

By embracing online learning, students can significantly reduce their transportation costs while still receiving a quality education. Additionally, online learning offers greater flexibility, allowing students to learn at their own pace and schedule. This can be particularly beneficial for students who have to balance their studies with other responsibilities, such as part-time jobs or household chores. Online learning can help to reduce the overall burden on the education system. By decreasing the number of students who need to commute to school, we can alleviate pressure on transportation infrastructure and reduce the risk of overcrowding in classrooms.

To fully realise the potential of online learning in Nigeria, there is a need for collaboration between the government, private sector, and educational institutions. Government agencies can provide funding, infrastructure, and policy support, while private companies can develop innovative educational technologies. Educational institutions can adapt their curricula and training programs to meet the demands of online learning.

The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has played a crucial role in promoting online learning in Nigeria. The agency has invested in the development of equipped technology learning centres across the country, providing students with access to computers, internet connectivity, and educational resources. In almost all the 36 states of the country, F.C.T included schools should work hand in hand with these centres to use them to their full potential.

Online learning offers a promising solution to the challenges faced by Nigerian students. By taking advantage of technology and investing in infrastructure, the government can ensure that education remains accessible and affordable for all which NITDA has provided within their capabilities. The benefits outweigh the limitations. By embracing this innovative approach, Nigeria can ensure that all students have the opportunity to continue their education, regardless of their financial circumstances.
