The National Universities Commission (NUC) has approved 13 new degree programmes for Nigerian universities to enhance academic relevance and align higher education with global trends.

The approval was conveyed in a circular addressed to all vice-chancellors, signed by the Executive Secretary of the Commission, Professor Abdullahi Yusufu Ribadu, and released by the NUC’s spokesperson.

According to the circular, the new programmes have been incorporated into the Core Curriculum and Minimum Academic Standards (CCMAS). Experts drawn from Nigerian universities participated in developing the national component, which represents 70 percent of the curriculum, while institutions are expected to design the remaining 30 percent based on their academic focus and resources.

The newly approved degree programmes include Artificial Intelligence, Classical Christian Education, Human Kinetics (Sport Management), Geomatics Engineering, Community Health Science, Intelligence and Security Studies, Islamic Economics and Finance, Parasitology and Entomology, Telecommunication Science, Water Sanitation and Hygiene, Cooperative Economics and Management, Nuclear Science, and Nuclear Engineering.

The Commission advised universities interested in offering any of the programmes to commence implementation in the 2025/2026 academic session, subject to a successful resource verification exercise.

Vice-Chancellors were also directed to distribute the approved CCMAS documents to relevant faculties, departments, and academic planning units for necessary action.
