OpenAI Expands Access to Advanced Voice Mode, Unveils New Features
OpenAI announced on Tuesday the expansion of its Advanced Voice Mode (AVM) feature for ChatGPT, offering it to more paying customers. Initially, the feature will be available to users subscribed to ChatGPT’s Plus and Teams plans, with Enterprise and Edu customers expected to gain access next week.
As part of the update, AVM is receiving a fresh design, now represented by a blue animated sphere instead of the black dots originally showcased during OpenAI’s technology demonstration in May.
“Users will receive a pop-up in the ChatGPT app, next to the voice icon, when AVM has been made available to them,” OpenAI shared via its X account.
The company confirmed that “Advanced Voice is rolling out to all Plus and Team users in the ChatGPT app over the week,” alongside several new features.
These include the addition of five new voices, enhanced accent recognition, and improvements to conversation smoothness and speed.

Among the notable upgrades, the new voices—Arbor, Maple, Sol, Spruce, and Vale—join the previous options of Breeze, Juniper, Cove, and Ember. OpenAI’s decision to use nature-inspired names reflects its goal of creating a more natural and immersive user experience.
However, the voice “Sky,” which was part of the spring update, is no longer available following a legal dispute with actress Scarlett Johansson, who alleged that the voice closely resembled hers.
In addition to voice changes, OpenAI has integrated new customization tools. The Custom Instructions feature enables users to adjust how ChatGPT interacts with them, while the Memory feature allows the AI to remember past conversations for future interactions.
Despite these advancements, one anticipated feature—video and screen-sharing functionality—remains absent from this rollout.
OpenAI initially introduced this capability during its spring update but has yet to provide a release date for it.
For now, AVM is not available in certain regions, including the EU, U.K., Switzerland, Iceland, Norway, and Liechtenstein, OpenAI noted. The update further solidifies OpenAI’s ongoing efforts to enhance ChatGPT’s functionality, particularly for users who rely on voice interaction, offering a more personalized and seamless experience
