OpenAI has introduced new personalization options that allow users to adjust ChatGPT’s tone, including its level of warmth, enthusiasm, and emoji use.
According to the company, the settings—available in the Personalization menu—can be adjusted to “More,” “Less,” or “Default.” Users can also modify ChatGPT’s use of headers and lists. The update builds on existing tone presets such as Professional, Candid, and Quirky, which were introduced in November.
ChatGPT’s conversational style has been the subject of ongoing adjustments this year. OpenAI previously rolled back an update after users complained the chatbot was overly flattering, before later making changes to GPT-5 to appear warmer and more approachable following feedback that it felt too cold.
Some academics and AI critics have raised concerns that chatbots’ tendency to affirm users’ views may encourage dependency and could have negative mental health implications, describing the behavior as a potential design risk.
