OpenAI on Tuesday launched a new social app that lets users create and share AI-generated videos in a feed reminiscent of TikTok, marking its boldest move yet into consumer social media.

The invite-only Sora app, available on iOS in the U.S. and Canada, allows users to generate short clips using OpenAI’s video model and post them to a scrolling feed. A “cameos” feature enables people to upload a verified likeness of themselves to appear in videos, or grant friends permission to feature them in shared clips.

At launch, the app is free, with paid options only for additional video generation during high demand. OpenAI says parental controls and safeguards are built in, but critics warn the tool could be misused for deepfakes and identity manipulation.

By building a TikTok-style platform around AI video, OpenAI is positioning itself as a direct challenger to TikTok, Instagram Reels, and Meta’s new “Vibes” feature — betting that AI-generated content can fuel the next wave of social media.
