OpenAI is developing its first in-house artificial intelligence chip in partnership with U.S. semiconductor company Broadcom, the Financial Times reported on Thursday.
According to sources cited in the report, the new chip will be deployed internally to power OpenAI’s growing AI infrastructure rather than being sold to outside customers.
The move comes as OpenAI seeks to reduce reliance on Nvidia, whose GPUs dominate the AI hardware market. The company has previously worked with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) and AMD on chip development.
Broadcom CEO Hock Tan confirmed during an earnings call that the company secured over $10 billion in AI infrastructure orders from a new major client, though he did not explicitly name OpenAI.
The project aligns OpenAI with tech giants like Google, Amazon, and Meta, which have all developed custom silicon to cut costs and handle rising computing demands from AI workloads.
