Pantami Urges IT Professionals To Focus On Cybersecurity At NCS 2021 Gathering

TECHDIGEST – Nigeria’s Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr. Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami, has urged IT professionals to give more attention to safety and security of the country’s cyberspace.

The minister in a virtual address this week told participants at the 2021 Nigeria Computer Society (NCS) International Conference holding in Uyo, Akwa Ibom state that “priority and preference should be given to cybersecurity as the capacity and quality of solutions, particularly, indigenous solutions deployed to address existing or new problems must meet the minimum global requirements.”

While speaking on “The Imperatives of Cybersecurity for a Digital Economy,” Dr Pantami as Chairman of the event stressed the strategic values of digital innovation and digital entrepreneurship as the foundation of a successful indigenous digital economy which cab only thrive in a ‘safe and secure cyberspace.’

He said this underscored why government has instituted strategies and policies to ensure that cybersecurity is given priority across board.

His words: “The Nigeria Data Protection Regulation (NDPR), a regulatory instrument established to protect the privacy and confidentiality of citizens, the National Cybersecurity Policy & Strategy and the Computer Emergency Response and Readiness Team (CERRT) are some of the initiatives put in place by government to ensure the success of a Digital Economy and a safe cyberspace.”

The 2021 NCS gathering #isde2021 is fostered on the theme: Innovative Systems for a Digital Economy.

Pantami asked for the support of the professional body and other stakeholders in the pursuit of safety and professionalism in the sector and assured the gathering of government’s determination to enforce compliance.

In attendance at the Uyo meeting are members of the Computer Professionals (Registration Council of Nigeria) led by the President/Chairman of Council, Mr Kole Jagun and the immediate Past President/Chairman of Council, Prof Charles Onuwa Uwadia; A delegation from the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), led by the Director General, Mallam Kachifu Inuwa Abdulahi who was represented by the Deputy Director, Corporate Planning and Strategy, Dr. Aristotle Onumo.

Others are Mrs. Ibukun Odusote of the Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy and Chief Executive/Principal Consultant at Sigma-Beta-Alpha Limited. Mr. Tunde Ezichi.
