Protest As Google Lays off 100 Workers

The Alphabet Workers Union, representing Google employees, has expressed concern over Google’s decision to lay off hundreds of staff working on digital assistant, hardware, and engineering teams. This move follows Google’s announcement a year ago about cutting 12,000 jobs globally, constituting 6% of its workforce.

The affected employees include those working on the voice-based Google Assistant, augmented reality hardware team, and central engineering organization. In response, the Alphabet Workers Union stated on Thursday, “Tonight, Google began another round of needless layoffs. We won’t stop fighting until our jobs are safe!”

Despite Google’s substantial quarterly earnings, the company continues to implement staff reductions.

The tech giant faces increased competition in the artificial intelligence sector from rivals like Microsoft Corp. and OpenAI, creator of ChatGPT.

Google executives have committed to streamlining operations to allocate resources strategically in response to market challenges. Google acknowledged ongoing organizational changes aimed at efficiency and alignment with product priorities.

The Alphabet Workers Union said it remains steadfast in its commitment to protecting the jobs of its members in the face of these workforce adjustments.
