Earbuds fitted with miniature cameras could become part of the next generation of AI-powered wearable devices, following a concept demonstration by audio company Cleer at Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Summit.
The concept uses cameras built into the earbuds to capture information about the wearer’s surroundings. Rather than functioning primarily as conventional cameras, the sensors are intended to provide visual information that an AI system can combine with voice input to understand context.
Potential applications include real-time translation, context-aware digital assistants and more personalised audio experiences.
Qualcomm said the concept is built around its Snapdragon Sound platform and demonstrated alongside the company’s latest Snapdragon Sound Elite Gen 2 chip.
The chip is designed for earbuds, headphones and audio glasses, with Qualcomm positioning it as part of a broader push to bring AI capabilities directly into wearable devices.
According to Qualcomm, Sound Elite Gen 2 is 30 per cent smaller and twice as powerful for AI workloads compared with its predecessor, while offering up to 40 per cent greater power efficiency.
One of its major changes is the inclusion of an integrated, low-power Wi-Fi 6E radio, allowing compatible wearables to connect directly to cloud services without relying on a smartphone.
Qualcomm is also developing Snapdragon Sound Apps and Agents for functions including voice assistance, translation and transcription.
The platform includes support for aptX Lossless audio and XPAN connectivity, along with AI-based improvements to noise cancellation, speech capture and voice clarity.
The company sees hearables as part of a wider network of connected devices capable of understanding a user’s surroundings and responding to requests.
Neither Qualcomm nor Cleer has announced plans to put the camera-equipped earbuds on sale, making the demonstration an early indication of how manufacturers could integrate visual sensing into personal audio devices.
Apple has also been reported to be exploring camera-equipped AirPods, although the company has not confirmed such a product.
