OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has predicted that advances in artificial intelligence could automate up to 40% of tasks currently performed by humans within the decade.
Speaking in an interview with German newspaper Die Welt, Altman said he expects artificial general intelligence (AGI) to emerge before 2030, with capabilities surpassing human performance in multiple areas.
“I can easily imagine a world where 30 to 40% of the tasks that happen in the economy today get done by AI in the not very distant future,” Altman said.
He compared future AI-human relations to that of a “loving parent,” echoing views of leading AI researchers Geoffrey Hinton and Yann LeCun that systems should be aligned with human values.
Altman acknowledged possible unintended consequences of AGI but stressed the importance of embedding safety and ethics into model development.
