Google’s AI Overviews feature is being targeted by scammers who are attempting to insert fake customer service numbers into search results, according to a report by Wired.
AI Overviews, introduced in 2024, display AI-generated summaries at the top of search results, often replacing traditional website links with concise answers. While designed to simplify information access, the feature has faced criticism for inaccuracies and so-called “hallucinations.”
According to Wired, threat actors are now attempting to manipulate the summaries to display fraudulent phone numbers. When users search for a company’s contact details, AI Overviews may present a number that connects them to scammers posing as legitimate representatives.
For years, scammers have sought to push fake numbers into search results. However, the report suggests AI Overviews may amplify the risk because the information is presented as a verified summary, increasing user trust.
It remains unclear how the misleading numbers are being injected. The report indicates that scammers may be publishing false contact details on obscure websites that mention major companies. AI Overviews may then aggregate the information without adequately verifying its authenticity.
Google said it has added safeguards to improve scam detection within AI Overviews and continues refining its systems. The company also advises users to verify contact details by consulting official websites or conducting additional searches.
Security experts recommend cross-checking company contact information directly from official sources rather than relying solely on AI-generated summaries.
