TECHDIGEST – The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has approved the commencement of registration for the 2023 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) from Jan. 24 to Feb. 14, 2023.

The Board also fixed March 16, 2023, for the conduct of its optional mock-UTME.

This is contained in a statement by the board’s Head of Public Affairs and Protocol, Dr Fabian Benjamin, in Abuja on Tuesday.

Benjamin said that the board, however, does not include registration for Direct Entry (DE) application documents as the DE registration would commence from Feb. 20 to April 20, 2023.

Also, he said the board, after considering its other commitments, fixed April 29, 2023, for the conduct of the 2023 UTME, and is expected to end on May 12, 2023

“Candidates are to note that they would be required to pay the sum of N1000 service charge for CBT centres for the conduct of mock examination at the point of registration.

“This is to prevent a situation where candidates would indicate their interest to sit the mock-UTME leading the various centres to commit human and material resources only for them to stay away on the day of the examination.

“With the new arrangement, candidates indicate their interest by paying for the mock at the point of UTME registration, therefore, precluding the centres from incurring any loss whether candidates turn up or not.

“The board advises all candidates, who desire to register for the 2023 UTME to immediately embark on the creation of their respective profiles (creation of profile code) ahead of the formal commencement of the registration exercise to avoid being caught up in any ensuing bottleneck,” he said. TECH DIGEST – A total of 845,517 candidates have registered to sit for the 2021 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, UTME being conducted by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB.

Similarly,38,886 persons have registered for the year’s JAMB’s Direct Entry for possible admission into universities.

Recall that the 2021 UTME/DE is due to close on 15 May 2021.

The board which disclosed this Monday, in its weekly news bulletin, said the numbers captured were as of Sunday, May 9,2021.

This was as it disclosed that mock examination slips for its UTME can now be printed out in preparation for the exercise.

According to JAMB, the slip contained candidates’ details such as registration number and the centre to which they are to sit for the examination within their chosen examination town.

In the bulletin released by its Head of Media and Protocol, Dr Fabian Benjamin, JAMB said:“Candidates who had registered for the 2021 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination and indicated interest to sit for the optional mock examination are to print their mock notification slips from Sunday, May 9.”

The bulletin read further: “This is in preparation for the mock examination scheduled for Thursday, May 20.

“The optional mock notification slips can be printed from anywhere candidates find to be convenient, provided they have access to the internet.

TECH DIGEST – Candidates that are to sit for next year’s Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, UTME, will have their applications linked to their National Identification Number, NIN, investigation by Vanguard has revealed.

This is despite the fact that the attempt to do so this year failed because of hiccups that trailed the exercise which eventually led to its abandonment at the end of the day.

Investigations by Vanguard at the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB and the National Identification and Management Commission, NIMC, have revealed the exercise will be part of the criteria for registering for UTME in 2021.00

Both agencies entered into an agreement early this year to make UTME candidates have their applications linked to their NIN, however, given the directive by the government that GSM operators should have the lines of their customers linked to their NIN, the pressure on NIMC is becoming overwhelming.

The Head of Corporate Affairs in the Commission, Mr Kayode Adegoke, who spoke to Vanguard, said the NIN will be used as one of the criteria to register UTME candidates from next year because the earlier agreement signed between the two agencies is still subsisting.

He explained that the NIN was not used in 2020 exercise due to some technical hitches that have been taken care of by the agency. He assured that NIMC was ready for the partnership as the agency had put all necessary machinery in motion to capture all the candidates.

On whether NIMC would have the capacity to capture the over two million prospective UTME candidates, he said measures had been put in place to capture at least four million persons in a month.

In addition, Adegoke said with the recent licensing of 203 agents to boost the capacity of the agency, the issue of capturing two million UTME candidates would not be an issue since the number of enrolment would be increased when the agents come on board next week.

‘The NIN was only cancelled this year for UTME registration due to some technical hitches but will be used in 2021.

‘‘We have the capacity to capture all the UTME candidates but my worry is that they may not take advantage of four months window they have from now to get registered until when it remains one week when they would be rushing and stampeding the Commission to capture them.

‘‘My conviction stems from the recent licensing of 203 agents by the Federal Government who are due to commence work from next week, immediately after Christmas,” he said.

He advised the prospective UTME candidates to take advantage of ample time they have now to get their NIN so as to avoid rushing hour and consequential denial to register.

‘‘They are not coming now that they have four months to enrol, it is when it remains one week that you see them rushing. There is no need to rush, if they start early now they have four months, they will all be registered. But you see, they will be coming one week to the deadline.

‘’If they can come now, in a month NIMC can enrol about four million, so if they come within two months we have captured them but they are not coming.

‘‘We have licensed 203 agents and when they come on board in a week or two weeks time, every one of them will be captured. They are starting in January but some are starting next week,’’ he further explained.

Meanwhile, the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB, has said it did not sign any contract with the National Identity Management Commission, NIMC, on the compulsory use of National Identification Number, NIN, as a requirement for registration for its Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, UTME.

Rather, the board explained that it merely agreed with the commission to forge a partnership on compulsory registration of its UTME candidates. It said even as the exercise was suspended this year due to technical issues, the partnership is still in effect.

JAMB’s Head of Media and Information, Dr Fabian Benjamin, responding to Vanguard’s inquiry on the issue, insisted that what JAMB signed with the identity management agency was a partnership and not a contract.

“What we agreed with NIMC over NIN was not contract. It was not a contract, it was a partnership,” he said.

He, however, failed to respond to an inquiry on how much was committed to the project.
