Bitcoin-based payments and settlement network Liquid Network has reported a security breach involving approximately $320 million worth of bitcoin withdrawn from its federation wallet.

The company said on Sunday that attackers withdrew around 4,000 bitcoin from a wallet that held approximately 4,200 bitcoin.

Liquid Network described the attackers as “purported white-hat hackers” but did not provide further details about their identity or motives.

The company said it had halted new transactions following the incident and warned that Liquid wallets could be affected.

The stolen funds were reportedly withdrawn through SideSwap, a settlement platform authorised to process withdrawals from the network.

Liquid Network said the key used to carry out the withdrawals itself had not been compromised, suggesting that the incident may have involved another weakness in the withdrawal process.

The company apologised to users and said it was assessing the impact of the incident.

The breach highlights the security risks facing cryptocurrency networks and digital asset infrastructure, where the compromise or misuse of authorised transaction mechanisms can result in the movement of large sums of cryptocurrency within minutes.

Bitcoin Edges Up After Falling Below $90,000 as Crypto Market Loses $1.2 Trillion

Bitcoin traded slightly higher on Tuesday after hitting a seven-month low below $90,000, as weak risk appetite and concerns over U.S. interest rates continued to weigh on the crypto market.

The cryptocurrency, which has wiped out all gains made earlier in the year, was last up 1.9% at $93,532 after dropping to $89,286. It remains 26% below its October peak above $126,000.

Analysts say doubts about future U.S. rate cuts and a broader pullback across financial markets have deepened selling pressure. Over the past six weeks, more than $1.2 trillion has been wiped off the value of global cryptocurrencies, according to CoinGecko.

Market players say the selloff has accelerated as institutions that bought heavily during the rally begin unwinding positions, contributing to contagion across the sector. Outflows from U.S. spot bitcoin ETFs have also intensified, with Morningstar data showing $3.7 billion exiting the funds since Oct. 10.

Bitcoin-linked companies such as Coinbase, Marathon Holdings and Strategy have also swung sharply with market sentiment.

Standard Chartered warned that a drop below $90,000 could push half of publicly listed companies holding bitcoin into losses. Collectively, listed firms hold 4% of all bitcoin in circulation.

Despite the downturn, Strategy founder Michael Saylor said the company added 8,178 bitcoin on Monday, bringing its total to 649,870 tokens.

Ether has also been under pressure, losing nearly 40% of its value from its August peak.

A London court has convicted a Chinese woman in connection with what authorities say is the world’s largest cryptocurrency fraud, following the seizure of 61,000 bitcoin worth more than $6.7 billion.

Zhimin Qian, 47, also known as Yadi Zhang, pleaded guilty at Southwark Crown Court to acquiring and holding digital assets tied to an investment scam that defrauded more than 128,000 people in China between 2014 and 2017.

The conviction caps a seven-year international investigation into a money-laundering network that stretched across multiple countries. UK detectives said Qian evaded capture for five years by travelling with false documents before she was tracked down in Britain.

Detective Sergeant Isabella Grotto, who led the inquiry, called the case “a painstaking, multi-jurisdictional investigation” that relied on cooperation with international partners.

Prosecutors said Qian fled China with stolen funds, which she attempted to launder through luxury property purchases in the UK. Her lawyer, Roger Sahota, told the court that she hoped her guilty plea would “bring some comfort to investors who have waited since 2017 for compensation.”

A Malaysian associate, Seng Hok Ling, also pleaded guilty to laundering funds linked to the fraud. Authorities have launched confiscation proceedings to recover more than £16 million from him, with the amount to be updated in line with bitcoin’s market value before sentencing in November.

The Metropolitan Police previously linked Qian to Jian Wen, a former takeaway worker in London who was jailed in 2024 for laundering part of the stolen assets. Wen was found to have rented a multimillion-pound home in north London and acquired Dubai properties worth over £500,000, despite her modest earnings.

UK Security Minister Dan Jarvis welcomed Qian’s conviction, calling it a “clear signal” that Britain is not a safe haven for money launderers.

Qian remains in custody and will be sentenced on November 10, alongside Hok Ling.

Bitcoin Dips Below $92,000 Weighing Down Crypto Market

Bitcoin continues its downward trajectory just days before the inauguration of President-elect Donald Trump, slipping below the $92,000 mark. On Monday morning, the leading cryptocurrency briefly dipped below $91,000 before staging a modest recovery.

This recent pullback is largely attributed to growing concerns over the US Federal Reserve’s tightening stance, with speculation mounting that its window for additional interest rate cuts may be closing. The decline has reverberated through the broader crypto market, leading to losses across various digital assets.

As of 2:34 p.m. Nigerian time on Monday, Bitcoin had shed approximately 3%, trading at $91,400.96. This marks a significant drop from its peak of $108,316 just last month. By Tuesday morning in Nigeria, Bitcoin had nudged up slightly, sitting at $94,800. Its post-election rally, which saw gains of around 40%, has now slowed considerably.

Other major cryptocurrencies were not immune to the downtrend. Ethereum’s Ether saw a drop of over 5%, now trading at $3,083.01. Solana, a once-promising contender, slid nearly 6%, while Dogecoin, the meme coin backed by Elon Musk, saw a decline of almost 5%. Cardano, meanwhile, took the hardest hit, plummeting nearly 8%.

With uncertainty surrounding global interest rate policies and a volatile crypto landscape, investors are bracing for a bumpy ride in the coming weeks.

Tech Digest- Bitcoin, the world’s leading cryptocurrency, surged to a new all-time high yesterday evening, reaching a peak of $94,000. This milestone marks another significant victory for the digital asset, fueled by a powerful bull run that continues to propel the market upward.

The latest surge places Bitcoin within striking distance of the coveted $100,000 mark, a price point predicted by many analysts before the end of the year. With just $6,000 separating it from this symbolic threshold, the cryptocurrency world is abuzz with anticipation.

While the future of any cryptocurrency remains inherently volatile, the current momentum suggests that Bitcoin’s ascent may continue. Reaching $100,000 would be a landmark achievement, further solidifying its position as a dominant force in the financial world.

However, investors should remain cautious and remember that cryptocurrency markets are prone to sudden fluctuations. Before making any investment decisions, it’s essential to conduct thorough research and understand the risks involved.

Bitcoin Network Hit One Billion Transactions Milestone

TECH DIGEST- In a historic moment for the digital currency world, the Bitcoin Network has achieved an unparalleled feat, processing its one billionth transaction after 15 years of operation.

As reported by CoinTelegraph, the landmark transaction, numbered 1,000,000,000, was officially confirmed in block 842,241, marking a pivotal moment in the evolution of Bitcoin. Clark Moody’s dashboard, a trusted Bitcoin user, played a pivotal role in tracking this significant event, noting the occurrence at precisely 9:34 pm UTC on May 5.

This milestone arrives exactly 15 years, four months, and four days after the inception of Bitcoin, with its enigmatic creator, Satoshi Nakamoto, mining the network’s inaugural block on January 3, 2009.

Throughout its remarkable journey spanning 5,603 days, the Bitcoin network has consistently processed an average of 178,475 daily transactions, showcasing its robustness and resilience in the face of evolving market dynamics.

The surge in daily transactions during Bitcoin’s fourth halving event on April 20 captured global attention, peaking at a record high of 926,000 transactions on April 23. However, the subsequent decline in daily transaction volume, totalling 660,260 on May 4, suggests a period of consolidation and recalibration within the Bitcoin ecosystem.

Despite recent fluctuations, Bitcoin’s current price stands at $63,750, reflecting a notable increase of over 12% since hitting a two-month low of $56,800 on May 2. Nonetheless, it remains down by 13.6% from its all-time high of $73,740, recorded on March 13.

Argentines abandon dollars for Bitcoin to tackle inflation

Argentines are abandoning the US dollar in favour of Bitcoin as the cryptocurrency’s value reached an all-time high this month.

The trend persists as Argentines search for a solution to the country’s accelerating inflation.

According to Business Insider, Argentine purchases of Bitcoin jumped to their highest weekly level in 20 months.

In the first week of March, the number of weekly Bitcoin purchases in the country increased to 34,700. That was more than double the number of buyers in February.

This uptick aligns with Bitcoin’s significant appreciation in recent months, climbing up to 73 per cent year-to-date and peaking at an all-time high of over $73,000. However, the present value stands at $63,000.

The recent price gain by Bitcoin is heavily influenced by the US’ first spot Bitcoin ETFs and excitement for April’s halving event. This has made Bitcoin an attractive hedge in Argentina, where inflation remains at a whopping 276 per cent

The new leadership of the country is fighting to prevent the country from sliding into its sixth recession in a decade.

The US dollar has been the go-to currency for Argentines in times of high inflation and instability, especially as the country’s economic woes often deteriorate the value of the peso.

The dollar has become widespread in Argentina and is even used to pay company salaries and Airbnb rentals.

However, over the last two months, the peso has gained 10 per cent on the dollar, reducing the appeal for the US dollar in the country.

Like the dollar, there is also a decline in demand for digital currencies tied to real-world currencies. Demand for Such digital tokens declined by 60 per cent to 70 per cent during Bitcoin’s price surge.

Recall that last year, Argentine President, Javier Milei, during his electoral campaign sold voters on the promise of dollarising Argentina’s economy.

However, since taking office in December, he has only devalued the official peso-to-dollar, saying it will take a long while before dollarisation becomes approachable.

Bitcoin is increasingly seen as a hedge for inflation around the world and Argentines are increasingly buying into it to fight the enormous 276 per cent inflation in their country.

Bitcoin has experienced a recent surge above $46,000, driven by steady inflows into various spot-based US funds and anticipation surrounding the upcoming halving event in April.

New spot Bitcoin ETFs have attracted significant interest, with substantial net inflows indicating strong investor demand. Notable funds like BlackRock and Fidelity’s ETFs have seen high levels of inflows, suggesting institutional interest in the cryptocurrency.

Historically, Bitcoin has seen positive price movements around Chinese New Year, with a notable rally of approximately 11%. This trend has occurred consistently over the past nine years, which could be a factor to consider in investment decisions.

Bitcoin’s performance against technical indicators, such as the 50-day moving average, is signaling a bullish trend, reducing concerns about major corrections. Additionally, achieving a weekly close above $44,000 could be seen as a bullish sign.

The upcoming halving event in April, which occurs every four years, is expected to reduce the reward given to miners for maintaining the security of the blockchain. This event historically has had a positive impact on Bitcoin’s price, as it reduces the supply of new coins entering circulation.

Some analysts and experts predict that Bitcoin could reach a peak of $88,000 in 2024, with expectations of a new record high six months following the halving event. However, it’s essential to note that these predictions are speculative and based on historical trends and market conditions.

When thinking about investing in Bitcoin or cryptocurrencies in 2024, carefully assess market trends, historical performance, technical indicators, and upcoming events like the halving.

Additionally, it’s crucial to understand the risks associated with investing in cryptocurrencies and to conduct thorough research before making any investment decisions.

India Regulates Cryptocurrency, Removes Binance from Google Play Store

The Indian government has taken stringent action against several cryptocurrency exchanges, notably impacting Binance, as users found themselves unable to access their crypto wallets, followed by the removal of Binance apps from the Google Play Store.

The government, citing concerns over alleged money laundering, did not provide an official communication but reportedly directed Google to remove these apps.

This action stems from inputs received by the electronics and IT ministry, acting on recommendations from the finance ministry’s Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU).

Indian users are now unable to access the web platforms of foreign cryptocurrency exchanges, including Binance, Kucoin, and OKX.

Orders have been issued to take down Android and iOS apps, with iOS apps already removed last week.

The FIU escalated the situation by issuing notices on December 28 to Binance and eight other exchanges, questioning their operations in India and expressing concerns about compliance with anti-money laundering laws.

The FIU recommended blocking access to the URLs of these platforms and gave them a two-week window to respond, which expired on Friday, leading to the government’s decisive actions.
