Elon Musk Unveils Tesla Cybertruck

Elon Musk’s grand unveiling of the Cybertruck in Dubai has set the stage for a new era in electric vehicle technology, combining cutting-edge features with a captivating aesthetic.

The live-streamed Cybertruck delivery event, lasting around 30 minutes, showcased the traditional Tesla flair with its energetic music, VIP guests, and, of course, Elon Musk himself. The much-anticipated Tesla Cybertruck deliveries mark a culmination of at least six years since Musk’s initial tweet about building the revolutionary truck and four years since its futuristic debut.

Beyond the flashy features, including bulletproof capabilities, here’s what we know about the Cybertruck so far. The vehicle will be available in three configurations, with the most affordable rear-wheel version priced at $60,990 but not set to hit the market until 2025. The all-wheel drive variant, boasting a 341-mile range and starting at $79,990, and the powerful Cyberbeast, with an estimated 320-mile range and a $99,990 price tag, were also unveiled. Both versions claim an impressive towing capacity of 11,000 pounds.

Tesla plans to offer a range extender for the all-wheel drive version and Cyberbeast, increasing their estimated ranges to 470 miles and over 440 miles, respectively. Musk explained via X (formerly Twitter) that the range extender would be an “optional pack” fitting into a third of the truck bed, designed for long trips or towing heavy loads, yet no details about pricing have been disclosed. It’s worth noting that any Cybertruck or SUV priced above $80,000 won’t qualify for the $7,500 federal tax credit. This stipulation raises questions about the eligibility of the middle-tier variant with a range extender.

The current specs differ from Musk’s 2019 projections, with changes in pricing, towing capacity, and range. Despite these shifts, the Cybertruck boasts impressive features such as a drag coefficient of 0.335, 35-inch all-terrain tires, a composite truck bed, and a maximum payload of 2,500 pounds. The Cybertruck’s exterior includes armoured glass resistant to impacts and a switch to a 48-volt electrical system for enhanced power distribution. Inside the Cybertruck, a futuristic experience awaits with an 18.5-inch infinity touchscreen in the front, a 9.4-inch touchscreen in the back, a 15-speaker sound system, a built-in HEPA air filter, wireless charging, and versatile power outlets.

Nigeria Unveils Ambitious Plans for Rural Electrification at COP28

TECH DIGEST- In a groundbreaking development at the 2023 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28) in Dubai, Nigeria is taking centre stage by presenting innovative strategies for rural electrification using homegrown technologies. President Bola Tinubu is spearheading Nigeria’s representation at COP28, a pivotal gathering where global leaders converge to formulate policies addressing climate change impacts and limiting temperature rises.

The ongoing event in Expo City, Dubai, has attracted a distinguished assembly of presidents, heads of state, government officials, business leaders, investors, development partners, civil society organizations, academics, and media representatives.

Participating in a crucial panel session titled ‘Advancing Sustainable Rural Electrification through Homegrown Technologies’ is Mr. Khalil Suleiman Halilu, the Executive Vice Chairman/CEO of the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI). Moderated by Al Amin Idris, CEO of Interface Africa, the panel features esteemed speakers including Gunther Beger, Managing Director of the Directorate for SDG Innovation and Economic Transformation (UNIDO); Mohammed Umar Bago, Governor of Niger State, Nigeria; and Miklós Veszprémi, Climate & Sustainability Expert Consultant at Boston Consulting Group (BCG).

Halilu is expected to shed light on NASENI’s pivotal role in promoting the development and adoption of homegrown technologies for rural electrification in Nigeria. He will elaborate on the agency’s initiatives aimed at advancing sustainable rural electrification, including partnerships with government agencies and companies such as the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) and Family Homes Funds Limited (FHFL).

Since assuming office last September, Halilu has prioritized sustainable rural electrification through renewable energies. NASENI has inked strategic partnerships to ensure the provision of affordable renewable energy solutions and housing in rural communities. These collaborations involve funding research and development, facilitating technology transfer, and supporting the commercialization of innovative solutions.

Noteworthy partnerships include an agreement between NASENI and REA to deploy solar resources and other renewable energy technologies for increased electricity supply to Nigeria’s rural areas. Additionally, in November, Family Homes Funds Limited signed an MoU with NASENI to promote modern and sustainable building designs for affordable housing across Nigeria.

Halilu emphasized during the MoU signing event with FHFL that “the Agency will contribute toward reducing the cost of building materials so that Nigerians can build, own homes and deploy affordable solar energy solutions.” Family Homes Funds Ltd, a federal government-owned limited liability company represented by the Federal Ministry of Finance and the Nigerian Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA), plays a key role in these collaborative efforts. The developments showcased at COP28 underscore Nigeria’s commitment to leveraging indigenous technologies for sustainable rural development and electrification.

Pantami Inaugurates Committee To Develop National Strategy For Child Online Protection

TECHDIGEST – Isa Ali Pantami, a professor of Cybersecurity and the Minster of Communications and Digital Economy, has inaugurated a committee on Child Online Protection,

The Committee, according to the Minister is in line with the global UNICEF advocacy campaign for Protecting children online.

Pantami inaugurated the National Committee on the Development of a Unified National Strategy on Child Online Protection (COP) in Nigeria on Tuesday in Abuja.

The committee has members drawn from the Federal Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy; Federal Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development; Federal Ministry of Justice; Nigerian Communication Commission (NCC); National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA); National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP); Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria (ALTON); Cyber Security Experts Association of Nigeria (CSEAN); and Network Against Scam and Cyber Crime.

The move aimed at developing a National Strategy on Child Online Protection (COP) in Nigeria is in alignment with global best practices as identified by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) in a recent policy brief and guidelines issued in 2020.

Recall that the NCC carried out massive campaign between 2019 and 2020, sensitising the Nigerian child on the safe use of the Internet and has constantly given updates on issues relating to cybersecurity.

Prof. Umar Danbatta, the Executive Vice Chairman of NCC, said that as a result of the ubiquitous availability of Internet access in homes, schools, libraries, mobile phones and so on, children are increasingly becoming involved in the use of new technological applications and taking advantage of the opportunity they provide for learning, research, and entertainment, however, children deserve to be thought about the pros and cons of usage of the internet.

The sensitisation campaign by the Commission amongst other things pushed for enhanced safety online so Nigerian children can competitively engage one another in productive and guided interactions; enabled the provision of a safe and secured cyber space for Nigerian digital citizens, along with promoting positive use and experience from the Internet for children and young people, as well as provide regional advocacy and awareness for Nigerian Child Online Protection Policy and recommend safety measures.

The sensitisation campaign also provided regional awareness incorporating local languages and cultural norms; shared knowledge and experience while facilitating international strategic partnerships to define and implement concrete initiatives as well as increase the understanding of child online safety among government, industry, educators and civil society organisations.
