The Economic Confidential, a publication of Image Merchants Promotions Limited (IMPR), will on Wednesday, August 27, 2025, host its third Public Lecture in Abuja, where new books addressing critical national issues will also be unveiled.

The annual event has become a high-profile platform for shaping economic thought and bridging policy with practice. This year’s lecture, themed “Agenda for a Digital Global Economy,” will be delivered by Mallam Kashifu Inuwa, Director-General of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA). The Ministers of Foreign Affairs, Health and Information as well as Special Adviser on the Economic Matters will serve as Special Guests of Honour.

The Managing Editor of Economic Confidential, Mr. Abdurrahman Abdulraheem said the lecture is expected to deepen national conversations on how Nigeria can harness digital transformation and technological innovation to drive growth and reposition its economy in the global arena.

Alongside the lecture, three new books authored by young professionals and corps members at IMPR will be presented. The titles include “Renewed Hope in Central Banking” by Rahman Oladosu, “Healing Nigeria: A Chronicle of Health Reforms” by Lawal Mamman and Maimuma Aliyu, and “Diplomacy and Digital Innovation: Youth Insight” by Fatimah Usman and Umar Bala.

Forewords for the books were written by Dr. Sule Yau Sule, Chairman of IMPR’s Board.

The maiden edition of the Public Lecture in 2023 focused on “Economic Diversification in an Evolving Cashless Society.” It featured former Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Professor Isa Ali Pantami, as Guest Speaker, with Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission Chairman, Mohammed Shehu, was the Special Guest. Books presented then included “Pantami: The Trials and Triumphs of a Digital Economy Maestro” by Yushau A. Shuaib and “eNaira Revolution: A Peep into Nigeria’s Cashless Future” by Abdulrahman Abdulraheem.

The second edition, held in 2024, centred on “economic growth and food security.” It was delivered by Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, with Vice President Kashim Shettima as Special Guest of Honour. A book titled “Impactful Public Relations in Customs Management: The CG Wale Adeniyi Example,” co-authored by Maryam Na’Allah and Kabir Abdulsalam, was launched.

With its tradition of combining robust policy dialogue and knowledge-driven publications, this year’s event is expected to provide fresh perspectives on digital opportunities, economic sustainability and good governance as Nigeria navigates its political and socioeconomic transitions.

TECH DIGEST- Vice President Kashim Shettima, Comptroller General of Customs Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, and Aliko Dangote, President of the Dangote Group, have been recognised for their outstanding contributions to Nigeria’s economic development.

VP Shettima was awarded the Economic Advisory Leadership accolade, while CG Adewale was named CEO of the Year in the public sector. Dangote, on the other hand, was awarded the CEO of the Year in the private sector.

The awards were presented during the second edition of the Economic Confidential lecture and book launch, titled “Impactful Public Relations in Customs Management: The CG Wale Adeniyi Example”.

Dr. Sule Ya’u Sule, Chairman of the Board of Image Merchants Promotion (IMPR), the publishers of PRNigeria and Economic Confidential, lauded VP Shettima’s pivotal role in driving Nigeria’s economic growth and development under President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

“Through his leadership, the National Economic Council (NEC) has fostered collaboration, shaped policies to stimulate investment, and addressed key economic challenges, including revenue generation, unemployment, and diversification, providing strategic guidance to transform Nigeria’s economy,” Dr. Sule said.

Regarding CG Adewale, the Chairman highlighted his exceptional leadership in running the Nigerian Customs Service, leveraging strategic communication to drive revenue growth and enhance national security.

“His innovative strategies have boosted revenue, improved cargo clearance, and reduced smuggling, earning the Service numerous accolades and cementing its reputation as a model for effective communication and revenue generation,” Dr. Sule added.

Dangote, described as Africa’s leading entrepreneur and philanthropist, was recognized for his role in driving Nigeria’s economic growth through diversified investments under the Dangote Group.

“His investments in cement, sugar, flour, and oil refining have created jobs, enhanced industrial capacity, and transformed the construction and energy sectors. Dangote’s commitment to infrastructure and social responsibility has profoundly impacted Nigeria’s socio-economic landscape, earning him numerous accolades as a key driver of the nation’s economic development,” the Chairman stated.

Other award recipients included the Central Bank of Nigeria for Outstanding Interagency Collaboration, the FCT Minister Barrister Nyesom Wike for Outstanding Infrastructural Development, Governor Inuwa Yahaya of Gombe State as Governor of the Year for Outstanding Infrastructural Development, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State for Outstanding Revenue Generation, and Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris Malagi, for Outstanding Strategic Communication.

He emphasized the importance of effective communication in governance, particularly in the Information Age, and highlighted the Tinubu administration’s efforts to ensure a redistribution of income in favor of the most vulnerable.

The highlight of the occasion was the public lecture and book presentation by Kabir Abdulsalam and Maryam Na’Allah of PRNigeria, which was endorsed by the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) and the Centre for Crisis Communication (CCC).

… Urges Stakeholders to eschew divisive content, fake news and hate speech

Abdulrahman Abdulraheem, Managing Editor of Economic Confidential at the Conference

Barely a week to the all-important presidential election in Nigeria, Economic Confidential has undertaken a robust fact-checking exercise to expose the process and people behind most of the pre-election polls that have predicted that certain candidates would win the election.

Since the 18 political parties on the ballot concluded their respective primaries and chose their presidential candidates last year, a lot of polls have been conducted by different organisations most of which made bold calls about the likely winners of the election.

Economic Confidential has, however, found out that some of the polls were conducted by organisations whose owners are linked to the same candidates they touted would win the presidential election.

Journalists at Economic Confidential and Fact-Check Team Press Conference

According to Economic Confidential quartet of Abdulrahman Abdulraheem, Mohammed Dahiru Lawal, Rahma Oladosu and Zeenat Sambo who addressed a world press conference at PRNigeria Centre in Abuja on Sunday, some of the polls have made big calls which are capable of causing violence if certain expectations are not met by the results announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Some of the polls predicted the Labour Party LP candidate, Peter Obi, as winner; some projected his All Progressives Congress (APC) counterpart, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, while some chose the flagbearer of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar.

They also found out that some of the polls were conducted without deploying the fundamental scientific factors like methodology, sample sizes, and proper geographical spread.

Economic Confidential and Fact-Check Team at the Press Conference at PRNigeria Centre

PRNigeria, a sister publication of Economic Confidential, had addressed a similar press conference last week where they drew the attention of security agencies, the media and the country at large to the pitfalls they noticed “in these pre-election days which can pose a threat to the country’s stability during and after the polls.”

“One of the pitfalls we observed was the proliferation of unscientific, unverifiable and (sometimes) partisan pre-election polls conducted by different organisations and private groups which seemed to make certain candidates and their supporters over-excited ahead of the polls,” Abdulraheem stated.

Emma Ujah of Vanguard Newspaper at the Conference

“What these calls do to the psyche of supporters is that they make them close their minds to the possibility of their candidates not winning the elections and if this happens, they are likely to suspect foul play and resort to violence along the same ethnoreligious lines that we have already noticed,” he added.

According to Sambo, one of the pollsters, Nextier, which called that Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP) would win the election, is owned by a man who is linked to Obi.

“The founder of Nextier, Patrick Okigbo, hails from the same Anambra state with the candidate touted to win in the polls. He also graduated from the same University of Nigeria Nsukka as the candidate. In July 2020, the candidate hailed Okigbo over an international award.

Yushau Shuaib of Image Merchant Promotion Limited introducing the presenters

“Nextier is also a profit-oriented organisation as it clearly states on the front page of its website: ‘We work with our clients to develop plans, frameworks and roadmaps to realise their economic and social goals,” Sambo noted.

The ANAP Foundation in two separate polls had also called the election in favour of Obi. But Sambo said according to Economic Confidential fact-checks, Mr Atedo Peterside, who owns ANAP Foundation, is a politician and close ally of the Labour Party candidate.

According to her, the digital footprints of Peterside exposed his relationship with Obi.

Premise Data was another group that conducted a poll that was widely reported to have been conducted by Bloomberg and projected Obi as the likely winner of the election.

Sambo said according to Economic Confidential fact-checks on the site of Bloomberg, the poll was not conducted by it as the news story saying ‘Bloomberg projects obi to win Nigeria’s presidential election’ was not found on the site.

She therefore told journalists that Premise Data only used the credibility of Bloomberg to give leverage to their poll.

“We also discovered that Premise Data, which had never done any poll before, had the same ownership details with another group, Redfield and Wilton, that did a similar poll and also projected that the same candidate would emerge,” she said.

As for the Nigerian Human Rights Community (NHRC) poll that projected Bola Tinubu to win the election, Sambo said the group was not forthcoming with the methodology that was deployed to arrive at the conclusion, adding that there were also mathematical inaccuracies in their report which cast a doubt on their credibility.

For the June Group Research and Council for African Security Affairs (CASA), which called the election in favour of Atiku Abubakar of the PDP, Sambo said the group did not show the methodology deployed and the research they presented to the public was not data-based.

The highlight of the press conference was the visual presentation of how the fact-checks were done by Lawal, who heads the fact-checking and investigation desk at PRNigeria.

Economic Confidential and Fact-Check Team at the Press Conference

Oladosu, on her part, presented Economic Confidential’s recommendations to the journalists, saying pollsters should eschew partisanship and stick to the fundamental science of survey, research, and polling if they must conduct pre-election polls.

She added that Nigerians must lower their expectations and go to the elections with an open mind, vote and be ready to accept the results announced by INEC even if it is in contrary to what the aforementioned polls had told them.

Economic Confidential also called on stakeholders to eschew fake news, hate speech, and divisive media content that can expose the country to danger during and after the polls.

Meanwhile, last week, PRNigeria, a sister publication of Economic Confidential, at a similar press conference listed potential security threats that could affect the elections if proactive measures were not taken by security service.

Economic Confidential and Fact-Check Team at the Press Conference at PRNigeria

The 30-page PRNigeria report titled: “2023 Election: SWOT Analysis of Major Presidential Candidates and Security Matters” was produced with support from the Wole Soyinka Centre for Investigative Journalism (WSCIJ), under the Collaborative Media Engagement for Development Inclusivity and Accountability Project (CMEDIA), and funded by the MacArthur Foundation.

Ahmed Halilu: The Man with Mandates to Print Naira Notes

TECHDIGEST – The Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, may have since announced that the naira notes of 200, 500 and 1,000 would be redesigned for some reasons, but it is the Nigerian Security Printing and Minting Company (NSPMC), a government-owned banknote printer and mint that will see the action through.

Founded in 1963, the federal government-owned minting firm is presently under the leadership of Ahmed Halilu, a participant in Senior Executive Course 39, 2017, of the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies Kuru, Jos.

The Economic Confidential reports that Halilu who was appointed the Managing Director of NSPMC last month is an elder brother to Aisha Buhari, the wife of the President.

Before his latest appointment, Halilu had headed the company in an acting capacity, following the resignation of Abbas Masanawa on May 16. Before the elevation, Halilu was the Executive Director, Corporate Services of the NSPMC.

Buhari approved the appointment of Halilu after the recommendation of the governor of Central Bank, Godwin Emefiele, who serves as the NSPMC board chairman.

Mr Halilu has over 23 years of experience in the Banking industry having worked with African International Bank Limited, AIB and Zenith Bank Plc.

Mr Halilu holds a Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture B. (Agric), Masters in Business Administration as well as Masters in International Affairs and Diplomacy all from Ahmadu Bello University Zaria.

Halilu had earned several other professional and diploma certifications that proved his wealth of knowledge. His managerial experience is not in question considering his 15 years of a managerial and financial portfolio.

Economic Confidential gathered that his first working experience post-nysc in 1992 was at African International Bank at Kano State. He would thereafter become a deputy manager in charge of the Foreign Exchange department in 1998.

Furthermore, his earliest managerial position was his two-year stint at CBN Kaduna Branch as the manager in charge of Corporate Banking Loans and Advances Recovery. In his long career as a financial expert, he had attended not less than 17 high-value courses.

The Adamawa State-born technocrat is also a member of the Nigerian Institute of Management, NIM.

Emefiele, while announcing the Apex Bank’s intention to redesign the country’s currency, said CBN would release the re-designed naira notes by December 15, 2022.

According to the CBN governor, this was targeted at controlling currency in circulation as well as curb counterfeit currency and ransom payment to kidnappers and terrorists.

He noted, “Indeed, the integrity of a local legal tender, the efficiency of its supply and its efficacy in the conduct of monetary policy are some of the hallmarks of a great central bank.”

On how it would help curb ransom payment, he said, “Also, in view of the prevailing level of security situation in the country, the CBN is convinced that the incident of terrorism and kidnapping will be minimised as access to large volume of money outside the banking used as source of funds for ransom payment will begin to dry up.”

He further identified more reasons that necessitated the re-designing of naira notes.

According to the apex bank governor, the challenges included: significant hoarding of banknotes by members of the public; worsening shortage of clean and fit banknotes with attendant negative perception of the CBN and increased risk to financial stability; and increasing ease and risk of counterfeiting evidenced by several security reports.

Following Emefiele’s pronouncement, experts and Nigerians would have concluded that critical stakeholders endorsed the move to give our naira notes a facelift. But they got a shocker when the federal government, through the Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Zainab Ahmad, denied having knowledge of the naira redesign.

Ahmad, while disowning the policy, said if implemented, the redesigning would portend great consequences for the nation and its economy.

With both Emefiele and Mrs. Ahmed serving in the same government, and the former even reporting to the latter, it is incredulous that FG is denying having knowledge of the Emefiele-led CBN’s latest action.

The two questions begging for answer are: how will CBN come up with an economic policy without first intimating FG? Is Emefiele and the Finance Minister not working for the same government?

Commenting on the development, former Economic Adviser and Chief Executive Officer of National Planning under President Olusegun Obasanjo, Prof. Magnus Kpakol, said that the exercise would come at a cost, adding, however, that the apex bank must have considered the cost of the change to the economy.

On his part, the Executive Director, Technical, Anchor Insurance Limited, Mr. Adebisi Ikuomola, said that the he doesn’t see the development having any tangible effect on the economy or strengthening the naira.

He said: “The CBN said that the move is geared towards reducing the volume of naira in circulation, however I don’t see how that can positively affect the economy or strengthen the naira. The naira is weak in the foreign exchange market and this policy may not turn that around.”

In his reaction, the Chief Executive Officer, Centre for the Promotion of Private Enterprise (CPPE), Dr. Muda Yusuf, described the planned move by the apex bank as embarking on a profligate exercise and a distraction.

His words: “It is difficult to see any compelling value proposition of this currency redesign idea. The cost of such an action would be outrageous and disproportionate compared to the expected benefits advanced by CBN.”

Economic Confidential notes that amid the raging debate on the re-designed naira notes, President Buhari’s inlaw, Ahmed Halilu, and his team at NSPMC have their work cut out for them, if they want to meet the timeline of the release of the new naira notes set by Emefiele. The clock is already ticking.

Nigeria Can Generate $3billion Yearly from IT Start-ups- NITDA DG

TECHDIGEST – The Nigerian IT start-up environment is capable of generating $3 billion annually, the Director-General of the Nigeria Information and Technology Development Agency (NITDA), Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi, has said.

The NITDA helmsman who disclosed this in an interview with Economic Confidential noted that the development translates to $30 billion revenue generation by 2030.

Mr Abdullahi noted that realizing the projection will entail harnessing the power of the internet by Nigerian innovators, adding that the Nigerian government is creating an enabling environment for start-ups to thrive.

The director-general described Nigeria as a country with great potential, going by its economic size, which, he said, makes up 18 per cent of Africa’s GDP.

“Africa, apart from China, has the opportunity to benefit from the new world we are creating. Our size, our population is of advantage because the world is shifting from the way we eat, the way we work and the way we do things.

“This new normal is powered by technology and technology is derived by people. People that drive this technology migration are young people and Africa has the highest youth population in the world.

“It is also projected that by the year 2050, Africa will have 1 in 3 youths in this world,” he said.

This, he said, is a potential advantage for Africa that Nigeria needs to harness well in order to benefit from the new economy, noting that three trends are shaping and creating the African economy.

According to him, the three trends, include increase, affordability and fast internet speed across the continent; startups to transform business landscape and the general economy.

He further explained that when you look at the emerging technology ecosystem, and the market they are creating, you will realize that there are two promising emerging technologies that are going to change a lot of things in the world: Blockchain and Artificial Intelligence.

He said that based on two reports by PWC, they projected that by year 2030, Blockchain technology will add up to $1.76 trillion to global GDP. And based on that report, they said that developing countries, at least, can add 4 percent of the GDP if they use that technology. For example, Nigeria’s GDP today is more than $400 million. The 4 percent of $400 million is more than $10 billion. That is the minimum GDP Blockchain technology can generate.

He further said that in another report, PWC projected that Artificial Intelligence can add more than $10 trillion to the global GDP by 2030 and based on that report, they said developing countries like Nigeria can add up to 5.6 percent to the GDP. So, still Nigeria, let’s say we are targeting only $10 billion which is far less than 5.6 percent of our GDP today. So, you can see we have 20 billion already.

“We are doing a lot of things to ignite innovative activities in these sectors like for Blockchain, we have developed National Adoption Strategy as approved by the Minister of Communication and Digital Economy, Dr Isa Ali Pantami. Because they are foundational technologies, they cut across so many sectors. So, we have developed that foundational strategy and we are working with the startups ecosystem to develop prototypes and identify the most promising ones”.

A member of both British Computer Society (BCS) Nigeria Computer Society (NCS) and the 1st Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert (CCIE) in Nigeria’s Public Sector, Kashifu remarked that in the area of Artificial Intelligence, Nigeria has built the National Centre for Robotics and Artificial Intelligence which is helping to harness these potentials. So, that’s $20 billion out of the $30 billion that we said.

“And today, based on Startups Genome report of 2020, Lagos startups ecosystem is valued at more than $2 billion and also recently, two of our startups have reached unicorn level that means evaluation of more than $1billion each. That is Flutterwave and Interswitch.”

“So, now we have $4 billion. Lagos ecosystem has $2 billion, Flutterwave $1 billion, Interswitch $1 billion, and then Jumia is already valued at $1.9 billion. Roughly you have $6 billion in Lagos alone talk less of the other parts of the country”.

Mr Abdulahi said the media and entertainment industry is powered by digital technology, mostly startups, and based on PWC report also, the Nigeria media entertainment sector will be valued at $10 billion by 2023. So, you can see that we are almost at that targeted $30 billion.

“So, we hope we will exceed that target and we are on track based on our initiatives, based on government policies like the National Digital Economy Policy and Strategy (NDEPS), and other government interventions in form of policies and infrastructural interventions. All these can help us to reach that target of $30 billion by 2030.

TETFUND Focuses on 13 Thematic Areas of Research and Development

TECH DIGEST – The Tertiary Education Fund (TETfund) is focusing its intervention on 13 thematic areas of research and development.

The Executive Secretary and Chief Executive Officer of TetFund, Professor Suleiman Elias Bogoro disclosed this in an interview with Economic Confidential in Abuja.

According to him, its special committee of professionals are expected to drive TetFund’s intervention policy in public tertiary institutions towards the nation’s economic and technological competitiveness and ensure a paradigm shift in research and development in the country.

He listed the thematic areas to include education, agriculture, Information Communication Technology (ICT) and digital economy, engineering, defense and military, energy, environment and bio-resources, Medicine, pharmaceuticals, petroleum, industrialization and infrastructure development.

He said the move was to pursue the drive for the institutionalization of research and development.

According to him, the Committee has started work in earnest and is moving round this country. They are moving round to meet the big guns in the industries and the private sector.

He noted that “in the most competitive economies, the greatest of technologies, it is all about knowledge. It is about science, technology and innovation (STI), largely, and of course leadership that shows the right way, and gives the right example going forward.

Asked whether the development was a tall order that may face challenges in the coming days, Professor Bogoro said” Not at all. We are encouraged by the support of the Hon Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu as well as the commitment and backing of President Muhammadu Buhari in this direction. I am glad to inform you that President Muhammad Buhari has graciously taken significant steps in providing a framework for the development of science and technology by mainstreaming it into the country’s national development strategies”.

He posited that Science, Technology and Innovation has come to stay in the country as it can be viewed with the lens of 50 per cent increment in the National Research Fund(NRF) of TetFund in the 2020 approved budget.

He further stated that the Board of Trustees of TetFund having realized the position of content development, especially the place of research and development in global ranking of tertiary institutions, recommended the increment of the NRF, adding that currently, the NRF is the foremost and largest funding window for research and development in Nigeria.

In his reaction as to why the agency is currently targeting research and development as apriority, the versatile professor said “we are happy to elevate research and development in identifying the right priorities going forward. The greatest of nations, the greatest of economy, and the greatest of technology are all hinged on quality education, and it is research that defines quality education.

He argued that the US and Russia, are using research to develop their military and technological mind for economic advantage, stressing that it has become necessary for government, the academia and industry to interface in a sustainable manner that produced goods and services for local consumption and export, adding that any research that did not hold out commercial possibilities was an effort in futility against emerging realities.

The 162-member committee on R&D were drawn from a pool of Nigerian researchers, innovators, representatives of relevant MDAs, and the private sector.

Nigerian Technopreneurs Launch Myclinic.ng Mobile App For Medical Consultation

TECH DIGEST- A team of Nigerian technicians, entrepreneurs, medical doctors and pharmacists have launched Myclinic.ng, a healthcare solution that enables families and individuals to access high-quality healthcare from anywhere, anytime, in cost-effective and convenient manners through mobile phones.

According to a co-founder of Myclinic.ng, Mr. Abubakar Hassan, the technology is built on the conviction that access to healthcare should not be stressful or ridiculously expensive.

He said: “Anyone having any kind of health issue or a sick patient will be able to consult a medical doctor through a phone application, the online platform we developed.”

Hassan told the Economic Confidential said that the online consultation platform, allows patients from anywhere and anytime to talk to doctors online or through its toll-free line.
According to him, the consultation platform’s vision is to give Africans access to online medical consultations, regardless of their location.

“Before the launch, we have been walking on this since 2018. We finished building the application around mid-2019 and since then, tests have been going on. We took to so many parts of Nigeria for people to have a direct feel of the software. We have over 1000 consultations so far,” Mohammed recalled.

While disclosing that the number of their subscribers is growing steadily, the Myclinic.ng Founder, said: “We have about 3400 subscribers. And before the launching, we came up with a new system. A toll-free consultation line that allows bulk of Nigerians who do not have access to the internet to still have access to our platforms. Patients can just put a call through so long as they have GSM network signals on their mobile phones.”

According to Hassan, “They can dial our toll-free lines and our customer representative will connect them with a doctor. This means that a woman selling grains in Aba market or a farmer from a remote village in Kano State can just pick her or his phone from their farm or village and speak to our doctors in their native language.”

He said though their clients have been calling from all parts of the country, majority of them call in from Lagos, Abuja and Kano States.

“Our marketing strategy is quite unique. At the moment, we are trying to reach out to Nigerians directly by using social media and other general marketing platforms. We are partnering with the largest provider of primary health care i.e the community pharmacies. We have arranged with them to serve as boarding centres and prescription pick-up point,” he added.

Hassan, while noting that the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has been part of their journey, said: “Since we participated in a competition they organized, NITDA has been supportive. They have been monitoring our progress and successes. Presently, we are running an accelerator programme under the supervision of NITDA. We have had a great deal of mentorship from NITDA.”

The federal government of Nigeria is establishing technology hubs through its digital economy agenda to fostering tech innovation among teams of intelligent, creative, passionate, tech-savvy young Nigerians.
