TECHDIGEST – Prof Ishaq Oloyede has handed over the Baton of the leadership of JAMB to Fabian Benjamin Okoro who is the director of information technology services of JAMB following the expiration of his tenure as JAMB boss and the failure of President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration to announce either his replacement or reappointment.

Prof. Oloyede, who was appointed as the Registrar of the Agency on August 1st 2016, has completed his five-year term of office at the weekend. He has been praised by many for reportedly turning around the examination body, especially in the areas of financial discipline, accountability and war against examination malpractices.

According to the information gathered, prof. Oloyede’s decision to hand over to Mr Fabian Okoro was due to the directive by the ministry of education that all the concerned chief executives should hand over to the most senior directors in their agencies.

Mr Fabian Okoro, who joined JAMB in 1993 as a programmer and was appointed a deputy director in 2018, is said to be the most senior director in the establishment.

He is a graduate of Computer Science from the Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA) and holds a Master of Science in Computer Science with option of internet computing from the University of Bedfordshire, United Kingdom in 2007.

After working for JAMB as a programmer for three years, the new acting registrar was promoted as a senior programme in 1996 and became a chief system analyst in 2002 and an assistant director in 2006.

He is said to have contributed significantly to the reform in the information technology unit of the examination body having received nudge and support from Mr Oloyede who reportedly brought new innovations to the body’s operations since his appointment five years ago.

At the moment, it is not certain if President Buhari will reapoint Prof Oloyede as no official statement has been made regarding this by the education ministry.

TECH DIGEST – The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) says it has not fix another examination for any category of candidates on July 3 as being peddled in some quarters.

The board’s Head of Media and Protocol, Dr Fabian Benjamin, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Lagos that the report “is not correct’’.

Benjamin noted that almost all results of candidates, who sat for the 2021 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), have since been released.

According to him, JAMB has at no point thereafter, announced any form of another examination for any category of candidates.

“No examination has been fixed for any category of candidates.

“The attention of the board was drawn to a twitter message credited to it that it had fixed another examination for candidates who scored lower than 170 in its examination and should come for a re-sit on July 3,’’ he said. (NAN)

TECH DIGEST – The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has directed candidates who sat for the 2021 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations (UTME), to check their results through its portal as the USSD code 55019 has some challenges.

Dr Fabian Benjamin, Head, Protocol and Public Affairs of the board, stated this in a statement made available to newsmen in Abuja on Saturday.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalled that the board had on June 25, directed candidates to check their results by sending UTMERESULT to 55019 through the GSM number used to obtain profile code.

Benjamin, however, said that the USSD method had been suspended because of the challenges.

According to him, “Candidates can check their results from anywhere there is internet access, checking by USSD code 55019 is suspended.

“It has come to the attention of the Board that the result checking on USSD code 55019 is saddled with some challenges.

“Consequently, the Board hereby directs all candidates to visit the JAMB portal to check for their 2021 UTME result.

“Each candidate is to follow these simple steps: Visit https://www.jamb.gov.ng, on the menu bar, click on efacility, on the page that shows up, click on UTME 2021 Main Results Notification Slip.

“Enter your registration number and click the button Check My Result,” he said. (NAN)

TECH DIGEST – The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has released the results of candidates who sat in more than 720 CBT centers for the 2021 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination conducted between June 19 and June 22.

Dr. Fabian Benjamin, JAMB Spokesperson made this known in a statement made available to newsmen in Abuja on Friday.

Benjamin advised each concerned candidate to check his/her result by sending UTMERESULT to 55019 through the GSM number used by each candidate to obtain profile code and UTME registration with the board.

He said that their results would be relayed to them immediately after following the instructions given to check the results.

He added that the results for subsequent days would however be released daily.

“The Board notes with satisfaction that the utilization of NIN (National Identification Number) has helped in curbing examination malpractices as the 2021 UTME has recorded the least incidence of irregularities since the inception of the CBT examinations.

“ Nevertheless, the Board would still review all the CCTV footage and other technical gadgets for detection of possible examination misconducts.

“Extremely comparatively few results are being withheld for further investigation,” he said.

He, therefore, said that the Board would not hesitate to withdraw the results of any candidate subsequently found to have committed any form of examination misconduct. (NAN)

TECH DIGEST – The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has delisted additional six Computer Based Centres (CBT) over poor performance on the second day of the 2021 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

Dr Fabian Benjamin, Head, Protocol and Public Affairs of JAMB, disclosed this in a statement made available to newsmen in Abuja on Tuesday.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the board had earlier delisted 24 CBT centres across the country over poor performance at the commencement of the 2021 UTME.

This figure brings the total number of delisted centres across the country to 30.

Benjamin said candidates who were unable to register during the allowable time for registration despite the extension were graciously directed to visit designated centres to be registered.

He said these categories of candidates that had been scheduled for the 2021 UTME were directed to print their examination notification slip for their schedule for the examination from June 21.

He, however, directed the candidates to print their notification slip from the JAMB’s website www.jamv.gov.ng.

He further said that 464,834 candidates across the country wrote the UTME on June 21, the second day of the examination.

The additional centres delisted include Dayspring Christian College, Opete town near Otokutu between Ughelli South lga and Udu Local Government, Delta and Fountain of Knowledge International Academy CBT, Azuiyiokwu, Abakaliki, Ebonyi State.

Also, Twelve Apostles College, Ndiaboishiagu Sharon, Abakaliki, Ebonyi State and Lead British International School, 1 Aliyu Mustdafa Street, off Wole Soyinka Street, Gwarimpa, Abuja, FCT, were delisted.

Others are Zaria Academy, Km 10, Zaria-Funtua road, Shika, Zaria in Kaduna State and Muhammed Kamaldeen CBT centre proposed Muhammed Kamaldeen University along FGC, Ogidi, Ilorin in Kwara. (NAN)

TECH DIGEST – The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has announced that it has delisted 25 computer-based test centres from the list of more than 800 earlier scheduled to take part in the ongoing Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations (UTME) which kicked off nationwide on Saturday. The examination body said the action is to ensure strict adherence to regulatory standards amongst its partners.

The decision, according to the examination body, followed the centres’ non-compliance to the laid-down procedures and the difficulties encountered by candidates posted to the centres to sit the examination on Saturday.

In a statement issued on Saturday evening by JAMB and signed by its head of public affairs and protocol, Fabian Benjamin, the examination body noted that candidates posted to any of the affected centres would be rescheduled.

“The following centres which failed during the conduct of the 2021 UTME on Saturday, June 19, 2021, are hereby delisted. Candidates posted to any of these centres are required to await further directives by checking their profile, email addresses and SMS on their registered phone for a new date,” JAMB said.

Affected centres

The list of the affected centres as released by the examination body revealed that they are spread across 11 states of the federation and the Nigerian capital, Abuja.

While six centres were delisted in Lagos, four are affected in Kaduna State and three in Edo State.

Abuja, Ondo and Plateau had two centres each while Benue, Delta, Imo, Nasarawa, Osun, and Oyo had one centre each.

In Lagos, the affected centres are Massino Computer CBT, Itoga, Badagry; IP Soft Technologies Ltd. Apapa, Lagos State; Institute of Criminal Justice and Criminology Administration, Festac Town; Sweet Valley Educational Services, Ikotun; Certified Institution of Shipping, Magbon, Badagry, and Al-Miyzan Schools CBT Centre, Ikotun.

The affected centres in Kaduna State are; Bethel Baptist High School, Kujama; Zabib College, Unguwar Dosa; St. Albert Institute, Kafanchan, and Skolak Resources Ltd.

TECH DIGEST – Some candidates who sat for Literature-in-English in the ongoing 2021 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) have lamented the change of syllabus of work by the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB).

The UTME started on Saturday across various centres in the country and is expected to run in three sessions till July 3rd, 2021.

One of the candidates, Yunusa Gift, at the Digital Bridge Centre in Abuja, said the examination was hitch-free but the literature questions were based on the past scheme.

Gift, who was in tears, said: “They gave us questions from Otello and others which are not part of this year’s scheme.”

“We are meant to take Midnight Summer but it was Otello that was there and the prose was supposed to be Land and Job, Invisible Man, but they were not there because we started a new scheme that was given to us,” she said amidst tears.

Oluoma Chukwuebele Christian corroborated Gift’s complaints, saying that, “the novels they told us to read this year did not come out at all and the prose that had expired that they asked us not to read is what eventually came out.

“I was just guessing in the examination hall because I did not read them,” Oluoma said.

Another candidate, Blessing Joshua, who was almost in tears, said she observed the change of scheme during the Mock examination and called the attention of the invigilator and he told her that it was just for the mock examination.

“And today it is the same thing again. What we are asked to read did not come out,” she said.

However, a science student, who wrote in Future Gate modern School, Ado, Chibuihe Elendu, said the examination was hitch-free though they started late.

He said the crowd was too much and that as at 8:30am, screening was still ongoing even for candidates who were supposed to write at 7:00 am.

“I am supposed to write at 9.00 am and got to this centre in Ado, at about 7. 00 am and everywhere is crowded. We started ours at about 11:00 am” he said.

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB)’s coordinator at the Digital Bridge centre, Stella Uju, said the examination was hitch-free and they have two batches of 250 each.

“We had no power failure, computer issues nor candidate problems only that five candidates did not turn up for the examination, making it a total of 495 who wrote today,” she said.

She, however, noted that the examination commenced in the centre around 8: 15 am for the first session and it lasted for about two hours and the second batch commenced at past 10: 00 am.

A total of 1.338,687 million candidates registered for UTME, while over 75, 328 registered for Direct Entry.

When contacted, the JAMB Head of Protocol and Public Relations, Fabian Benjamin, said the candidates were given a syllabus unless they checked the wrong one.

He said JAMB’s syllabus is different from that of WAEC unless they have mistaken theirs for that of JAMB.

TECH DIGEST – Joint Admissions and Matriculations Board (JAMB) has advised candidates whose registration process is incomplete to visit special centres to finish the process.

JAMB’s Head of Media Dr Fabian Benjamin gave the advice in a statement on Monday.

Benjamin said the advice affected only those who could not complete their registration during the earlier scheduled registration period.

He said only candidates whose names were compiled after giving reasons for the incomplete registration process and had been contacted “are expected to visit the centres”.

“At the end of the period originally scheduled for the 2021/2022 Unified Tertiary Matriculations Examination (UTME) and Direct Entry (DE) registration on May 15, the registration period was extended.

“Another two weeks that elapsed on May 29, was given to accommodate candidates who, largely due to issues related with newly introduced pre-requisite of National Identification Number (NIN), could not register.

“Additional extension of two weeks was made to compile the list of all prospective candidates who for any reason were unable to register.

“The candidates who have not registered but have secured the profile codes and initiated the registration process are expected to visit the specially designated registration centres to complete the registration on Tuesday, June 15.

“Designated registration centre for each candidate is being forwarded to them through the GSM text (SMS) messages and also available on the website of the Board (www.jamb.gov.ng) from 12 noon on Monday, June 14.

“The identification number on each form given to the candidates has been used to assign the candidates to their registration centres.

“Only candidates who have secured their profile codes are expected to visit the centres.

“Also, the names of the few who have not yet obtained their NIN or profile codes have been forwarded to NIMC and would be contacted as soon as they are cleared by NIMC.

“Each candidate posted to any non-JAMB owned CBT centre is expected to pay the registration fee of N1,000 to such CBT centre,” Benjamin said.

The 2021 UTME is scheduled to commence from June 19 to July 3.

The Registrar of the board, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, however, disclosed the possibility of conducting a second UTME for candidates with genuine registration challenges.

Oloyede had stated this on Wednesday in Lagos, while monitoring profiling of candidates with 2021 UTME registration challenges.

TECH DIGEST – A total of 160,617 candidates sat for the Mock examinations conducted by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) in its 777 Computer-Based Centres across the country, according to the board’s Public Relations Officer, Dr Fabian Benjamin.

Benjamin, who spoke in a telephone chat with newsmen, however, expressed sadness over a fire incident at one of the CBT centres in Abuja, saying that measures had been put in place to contain the situation.

“ We have over 160,000 candidates sitting for these mock examinations in all our CBT centres. We received reports of complaint of staff capacity and stability at one or two centres.

“ Like in Abuja, there is a centre, Dominion International School, Jabi, that caught fire during the examinations but everything has been put under control.

“ The exams are going on well and with what we have now, it shows we are good to go for the main examinations coming up June 19,” he said.

Meanwhile, candidates have continued to expressed satisfaction over the conduct of the 2021 mock examination by JAMB.

Some of the candidates who spoke to newsmen in Abuja, on Thursday, said the examination was a guide to prepare them for the upcoming UTME on June 19.

Fahd Isah, a candidate at the Global Distance Learning Institute, said there were no technical hitches at the centre owing to the availability of JAMB technical officers on the ground.

“ The exams went well, it makes me have an insight of how the main examinations will turn out. The mock exams gave us guidelines on what to look out for in the main examinations.

“ But our main concern is that the board should assist candidates by providing pen and paper to solve problems in mathematics and other subjects that have to do with calculations.

“ This will ease the stress of having to guess in the examinations without having to solve the problems,” he said.

Miss Adelinah Etete, also commended the board and the centre for the conduct of the examinations, while calling for replication at the main examinations.

She stated that she was impressed by the outcome of the examinations, as it would give them further opportunities to study more.

In a similar vein, Miss Rejoice Issac lamented that although the questions were tough, it provided a way to prepare candidates to read more for the main examinations.

Isaac also said that there were no technical hitches as everything went well as expected of an examination.

“ Though the examinations was a little bit tough but it is a good one as it will enable us to go back and read up areas we are still lagging behind in our subjects.

“ We did not experience any problems as regards Internet connectivity or power failure and the computers used were all working well,” She said.

Speaking further, the JAMB Technical Officer, Mrs Oluwaseun Omotosho, commended the candidates for their conduct during the examination.

She said that 200 candidates were to write the examination at the Global Distance Learning Centre, but only 125 candidates showed up.

Omotosho, who did not say the reasons why 75 candidates failed to show up for the examination at the centre, said the centre did not experience any hitches either before, during or after the examinations.

TECH DIGEST – The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board on Saturday announced the commencement of registration of candidates for the 2021 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination and Direct Entry to tertiary education institutions in Nigeria.

The decision came barely 48 hours after it had stopped the exercise over technical challenges of the National Identification Number.

But a terse statement issued by the spokesperson for JAMB, Dr Fabian Benjamin, said registration for the examination had now commenced in full swing as all the issues had been resolved.

How to apply for the 2021 UTME:

1. VALID, FUNCTIONAL E-MAIL, PHONE NUMBER

It is important to get a valid and functional e-mail account. You also need an active phone number. This is because you will need this for registration and to send and receive information from JAMB.

Your e-mail is also a form of identity for you.

2. NATIONAL IDENTIFICATION NUMBER

JAMB will be making use of the National Identification Number for registration this year. Being a compulsory requirement, you will need it for your enrollment.

3. VISIT JAMB WEBSITE

After having your email address a d NIN ready, you can proceed to the JAMB website.

When you get there, create a JAMB profile, preferably before purchasing the form.

4. CHECK JAMB iBass

After creating a profile, it is recommended that you check JAMB iBass to be sure of your eligibility to take this year’s examination. The information is provided on the official website of the exam body.

5. JAMB e-pin
After your eligibility has been confirmed, then you can proceed to purchase your 2021 JAMB e-pin registration from banks and other accredited outlets.

6. CBT CENTRE
Then, proceed to any accredited computer-based test centre with your personal details and your profile code.
