Huawei has unveiled its latest tri-fold smartphone series as the Chinese technology giant seeks to strengthen its position in the premium smartphone market ahead of Apple’s expected entry into the foldable category.

The new Mate XT2 series, launched on Monday, features devices that fold twice to expand into a tablet-sized display and is powered by Huawei’s new Kirin 9050 Pro chip.

Prices start at 19,999 yuan, equivalent to about $2,980, while the most expensive model costs 24,999 yuan, or approximately $3,725.

Sales are scheduled to begin on September 12.

Huawei Executive Director Richard Yu acknowledged the pricing pressure facing the company, citing rising memory costs and the expense of incorporating new technologies into the devices.

“Pricing right now is a real challenge, because memory costs have risen sharply,” Yu said.

Huawei said the new processor is designed to deliver greater computing performance while consuming less power.

The chip uses an architecture called LogicFolding, part of the “Tau Scaling Law” approach Huawei introduced earlier this year as it seeks to develop advanced chips despite U.S. restrictions on access to certain technologies.

The Mate XT2 features a redesigned folding mechanism, improved water resistance and a display privacy feature designed to prevent people nearby from viewing content on the screen.

Huawei has also upgraded the cameras and claims the new series delivers 42% better overall performance than its predecessor.

The launch comes as competition in the foldable smartphone market intensifies.

Xiaomi is also launching a competing foldable device, while Apple is expected to unveil its first foldable iPhone at its September 9 event.

Huawei remains the only major smartphone manufacturer currently selling a commercially available tri-fold device.

The company, however, cannot sell its smartphones in the United States, where it has been designated a national security risk by Washington.

Samsung remains the world’s largest foldable smartphone manufacturer. The South Korean company launched its own tri-fold device in December but reportedly discontinued sales after three months.

Huawei’s position in China remains particularly strong. According to IDC, the company held 22.6% of China’s smartphone market in the second quarter, ahead of Apple at 18.1% and Xiaomi at 12.4%.

Huawei’s dominance is even greater in foldable devices, accounting for 68% of China’s foldable smartphone shipments during the quarter, according to Smart Analytics Global.

The launch places Huawei ahead of major competitors such as Apple and Samsung, both of which are reportedly preparing similar devices for release later this year.

Unlike most foldable smartphones that expand into near-square tablet displays, the Pura X Max adopts a wider aspect ratio, resembling the form factor of a compact tablet. Images shared by Huawei show a short, wide device with a triple rear camera setup, minimal screen crease and colour options including white, orange and purple.

The design is intended to improve media consumption by offering a more natural viewing experience with fewer black bars when watching videos or reading content. However, the wider build may also make the device bulkier and less comfortable to hold compared to slimmer foldables.

Huawei has not yet released full technical specifications but confirmed that additional details will be unveiled on April 21. The device is already available for pre-order in China.

Industry analysts say the move reflects a broader trend among smartphone manufacturers to explore new form factors as the global handset market becomes increasingly saturated. Rival devices expected from Apple and Samsung are also anticipated to adopt similar wide-screen designs, targeting premium users seeking enhanced display experiences.

Huawei has unveiled a new artificial intelligence infrastructure designed to expand its computing power and position the company as a viable alternative to Nvidia, the U.S. chipmaker whose hardware has dominated the sector.

At the Huawei Connect 2025 conference in Shenzhen on Thursday, the company introduced the SuperPoD Interconnect, a system capable of linking up to 15,000 graphics cards, including its in-house Ascend AI processors. The technology mirrors Nvidia’s NVLink system, which enables ultra-fast communication between GPUs to handle large-scale AI training.

By clustering thousands of chips, Huawei aims to overcome the performance gap between its Ascend units and Nvidia’s highly sought-after processors. “This breakthrough means our customers will no longer be limited by individual chip performance,” a Huawei engineer told Chinese state media. “They can scale up to supercomputer levels of compute power.”

The announcement comes just 24 hours after Beijing formally barred domestic companies from purchasing Nvidia’s latest offerings, including the RTX Pro 600D servers built specifically for China. The ban reflects escalating U.S.–China tech tensions and increases the strategic importance of Huawei’s local solutions.

Analysts say the timing is no coincidence. “Huawei is stepping into the vacuum created by U.S. export restrictions,” said Kevin Xu, a technology researcher tracking semiconductor trends in Asia. “If they can deliver scalable AI compute, they stand to capture market share that would otherwise go to Nvidia.”

Although Huawei still lags in raw chip performance, clustering thousands of processors may provide enough computing power for Chinese firms to keep pace in areas such as generative AI and autonomous systems. For Beijing, the project is as much about technological self-reliance as it is about commercial competition.

Priced at $2,520 (about ₦3.8 million), the device expands on last year’s Mate XT, which pioneered the trifold design.

Unlike conventional foldables, the Mate XTs uses dual hinges to expand into a tablet-sized screen designed for multitasking. It runs on HarmonyOS 5.1 and comes with a 5,600 mAh battery, marketed as a productivity tool with PC-like functions such as window stacking and resizing.

The Mate XT series has been a commercial hit for Huawei. By Q2 2025, it generated $1.3 billion in sales from 470,000 units, according to IDC. The company currently holds 75% of China’s foldable market and has regained leadership in its home smartphone market with an 18% share.

Analysts say the success of Huawei’s foldables highlights consumer appetite for innovative devices despite high prices. The launch also underscores Huawei’s push to innovate in the face of U.S. sanctions restricting access to chips and software.

T2, the telecom operator formerly known as 9mobile, has signed a strategic partnership with global ICT giant Huawei to modernize its core network infrastructure, marking a significant step in its efforts to reestablish itself in Nigeria’s highly competitive telecommunications sector.

Although the financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, T2 described the agreement as a multi-million-dollar investment. The deal comes shortly after the operator rebranded, following years of turbulence that saw its subscriber base shrink from over 23 million to less than 3 million due to deteriorating network quality.

At the signing ceremony in Lagos, T2 said Huawei will overhaul its core systems to enhance capacity, resilience, and security. The initiative forms part of the company’s four-phase roadmap—Stabilisation, Modernisation, Transformation, and Growth—designed to restore competitiveness and lay the foundation for sustainable growth.

T2 Chief Executive Officer, Obafemi Banigbe, described the agreement as more than a technical upgrade, calling it a catalyst for the company’s revival. “Huawei has been a trusted partner throughout our journey, and this next chapter reaffirms our shared commitment to innovation, reliability, and excellence. With Huawei by our side, we’re not just upgrading our network, we’re future-proofing it,” he said.

Executives present at the event included Chief Operating Officer, John Vasikaran; Chief Technical & Information Officer, Ayodeji Adedeji; Vice President Corporate Service, Ifeloju Alakija; and Vice President Brands & Communication, Seni Ogunkola.

Huawei also pledged continued commitment to the Nigerian market. The CEO of Huawei Nigeria Carrier Business, Jiang Junyong, said the partnership would deliver world-class solutions to help T2 build a resilient, high-performance network capable of supporting next-generation services and long-term growth.

Industry analysts note that the project, expected to be completed in the coming months, could significantly expand T2’s coverage and improve service delivery at a time when Nigerian consumers are demanding faster and more reliable connectivity. The modernization marks the beginning of a multi-phase investment strategy by T2 as it repositions itself with a refreshed corporate and consumer identity.

China’s Huawei Technologies unveiled an AI computing system on Saturday that an industry expert says rivals Nvidia’s most advanced product, as the company aims to expand its footprint in the country’s booming AI sector.

The CloudMatrix 384 system made its public debut at the World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC), a three-day event in Shanghai, attracting a large crowd to Huawei’s booth with its showcase of cutting-edge AI innovations.

The system has attracted significant interest from the global AI community since Huawei (HWT.UL) first introduced it in April. Industry analysts see it as a direct challenger to Nvidia’s GB200 NVL72, the most advanced system-level offering currently available from the U.S. chipmaker.

In an April article, Dylan Patel, founder of semiconductor research firm SemiAnalysis, stated that Huawei now possesses AI system capabilities that could surpass those of Nvidia.

Huawei staff at its WAIC booth declined to comment when asked to introduce the CloudMatrix 384 system. A spokesperson for Huawei did not respond to questions.

Huawei has become widely regarded as China’s most promising domestic supplier of chips essential for AI development, even though the company faces U.S. export restrictions. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang told Bloomberg in May that Huawei had been “moving quite fast” and named the CloudMatrix as an example.

The CloudMatrix 384 system features 384 of Huawei’s latest 910C chips and, according to SemiAnalysis, surpasses Nvidia’s GB200 NVL72 in certain performance metrics, despite the latter using 72 B200 chips.

SemiAnalysis attributes this performance advantage to Huawei’s strong system design, which offsets the lower power of individual chips by leveraging a greater number of them and incorporating system-level innovations.

Huawei describes the system as utilizing a “supernode” architecture that enables ultra-high-speed interconnectivity between chips. In June, Huawei Cloud CEO Zhang Pingan confirmed that the CloudMatrix 384 was already operational on Huawei’s cloud platform.

By Mohammed Dahiru Lawal

As technology continues to emerge and transform lives disruptively, it becomes imperative to recognize the need for intentional inclusivity that bridges the digital divide across rural communities. This approach guarantees improvements in a nation’s overall digital economy index and enables inclusive growth.

It doesn’t take a “tech bro” to grasp this logic—beyond access to basic connectivity, rural communities face challenges like limited digital infrastructure, inadequate skills, and insufficient capital to drive tech-enabled entrepreneurship. Without these foundational elements, economic opportunities remain elusive, perpetuating poverty and stifling innovation, remote work, and self-employment opportunities in the digital sector.

This digital divide accelerates rural-to-urban migration, triggering broader socio-economic issues such as inequality, unemployment, and exclusion from emerging digital markets. Bridging this gap is not only critical for inclusive development but also for ensuring national economic resilience in a fast-paced digital world.

I was therefore excited when Alhaji Yushau Shuaib of PRNigeria and Tech Digest, invited me to accompany him to attend a ‘Workshop of the Future’ in Hadejia, Jigawa State.

Jigawa’s pioneering role in ICT dates back to initiatives like the Jigawa Informatics Institute (2001), which has trained over 7,000 students. Under leaders like former Governor Saminu Turaki, the state implemented projects like the Galaxy IT and Telecommunications system and the Jigawa Broadband Network, positioning itself as a technological trailblazer.

As we journeyed through Northern Nigeria’s hinterlands in our trusty Kia Sportage, driven by the ever-reliable Mikhail, I couldn’t help but reflect on the vast, untapped potential of the region. The scenic drive from Ringim to Taura, Majia, and Gujungu revealed expansive arable land and the unmistakable warmth of northern hospitality. Farmers, herders, artisans, and shop owners went about their crafts in an atmosphere of peace and tranquility, amplified by the cool Harmattan breeze.

Amid this serene backdrop, we passed by notable landmarks, including Khadija University in Majia, recently acquired by the Jigawa State Government for N11 billion. This investment underscores Jigawa’s commitment to educational and technological advancement, a theme that echoed as we approached our destination—FutureMap Academy in Hadejia.

FutureMap Foundation’s initiatives reflect its commitment to bridging the rural-urban digital gap. With a state-of-the-art training facility in Hadeija, the foundation provides a platform for young innovators to explore and apply cutting-edge technology, fostering economic growth and sustainable communities.

The academy, modestly nestled along Kilometer 3 on Nguru Road, welcomed us with fanfare to the venue of the Workshop of the Future. The event was organized by FutureMap Foundation in collaboration with NITDA, Jigawa State, Huawei, Cosmopolitan University, and Open School Initiative.

The energy was palpable as the Director General of National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), Mallam Kashifu Inuwa stepped onto the red carpet to a hero’s welcome as the Special Guest of Honour. His genuine connection with the community was evident in his interactions, pausing for greetings and photos amidst an excited crowd.

Inside the venue, the atmosphere was transformative, a glimpse into the future of technology. The workshop’s theme, “AI for Office Productivity, Design Thinking, Agriculture, Health, Education, Energy, and Climate Change,” was aptly represented by visuals of a young man wearing Virtual Reality (VR) headsets, seemingly reaching into the future.

At least 317 participants across various sectors attended the workshop.

In his keynote address, the NITDA boss emphasized the critical role of technology in reshaping Nigeria’s economic landscape.

“Our future lies in harnessing the potential of our youth and local resources. If we fail to embrace technology now, we risk being left behind in the global economy,” he stated, highlighting the importance of equipping young Nigerians with digital skills to compete globally.

Sessions covered AI applications in office productivity, healthcare, education, energy, agriculture, and climate change, blending theory with practical problem-solving simulations.

Panel discussions delved into Jigawa’s Digital Economy Project, showcasing how AI could modernize agriculture, drive financial inclusion, and streamline governance. Participants tackled real-world challenges in fintech, edutech, agritech, and more, developing actionable solutions through AI-driven approaches.

Turning Jigawa into a potential “Silicon Valley” of Nigeria was the dream of the moderator of the panel, Dr. Rislan Abdulazeez Kanya who is Technical Adviser to the Jigawa State Governor. He expressed optimism: “We have the talent; FutureMap is providing the platform to harness it.”

FutureMap’s efforts align with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), focusing on decent work, economic growth, innovation, sustainable cities, and partnerships. With partners like Huawei, NITDA, and the Jigawa State Government, the foundation is fostering a robust tech ecosystem.

The launch of a fellowship program at FutureMap Academy marks another milestone. Designed to nurture digital innovators and entrepreneurs, the fellowship will provide hands-on training in AI, data science, and software development, preparing Nigeria’s youth to lead in the digital era.

FutureMap Foundation’s work demonstrates that the future isn’t a distant concept—it’s being built today. By empowering local talent and driving digital transformation, the foundation is laying the groundwork for a thriving, inclusive digital economy in Nigeria. Hadeija, with its rich history and emerging tech focus, is proving to be a beacon of hope for rural innovation.

The “Workshop of the Future” hosted in Jigawa was more than an event; it’s a movement towards a digitally empowered Nigeria, bridging divides and unlocking opportunities for all.

Mohammed Dahiru Lawal is Executive Secretary, the Network of Advocates for Digital Reporting (NADIR).

Huawei Technologies Commits to Supporting Nigeria’s Digital Transformation Efforts

Huawei Technologies has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Nigeria’s digital transformation initiatives through its innovative programs, including the DigiTruck initiative.

The company made this commitment during President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s recent visit to Huawei’s Research Centre in Beijing, China, where key discussions on enhancing digital literacy and talent development in Nigeria took place.

During the meeting, Mr. Liang Hua, Chairman of the Board of Directors at Huawei, commended President Tinubu for recognizing digital technology as a critical driver of economic growth.

“This is very encouraging for us,” Liang stated.

“Huawei is fully prepared to offer its ICT expertise and become a reliable partner of the Nigerian government to support the country in achieving its policy objectives and furthering its digital, intelligent, and low-carbon development.”

He further elaborated that the DigiTruck initiative, a mobile ICT classroom launched by Huawei, would complement Nigeria’s Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy in training 3 million technical talents (3MTT).

“It will equip the country’s young population with the skills necessary for present and future economic opportunities,” Liang added.

The DigiTruck is designed to enhance digital literacy in underserved communities by providing mobile classrooms equipped with advanced technology, including computers, internet connectivity, and tailored educational materials.

Huawei plans to deploy the DigiTruck across 10 Nigerian states annually, aiming to train at least 3,000 students each year.

Mr. Chris Lu, CEO of Huawei Nigeria, also highlighted the company’s support for Nigeria’s National Talent Export Programme (NATEP).

“In the future, we hope to continuously develop the Network Operations Center (NOC) and expand its capacity so that it can meet the requirements of more African markets, thus facilitating more Nigerian technology talents in serving overseas markets,” Lu said.

During the tour of Huawei’s Research Centre, President Tinubu and his delegation were introduced to Huawei’s latest innovations in e-government, smart education, smart grid, and solar power—technologies that have the potential to significantly enhance public services, digital governance, and Nigeria’s inclusive development agenda.

Additionally, Huawei announced plans to establish a joint photovoltaic (PV) test lab with Nigeria’s Rural Electrification Agency (REA) to advance the country’s digital and low-carbon development goals.

Huawei Technologies, a Chinese multinational company headquartered in Shenzhen, is recognized as one of the world’s leading providers of information and communications technology (ICT) infrastructure and smart devices. The company has played a significant role in the development of Nigeria’s telecommunications infrastructure, contributing substantially to the country’s ICT sector over the years.
