In a statement released on Saturday by the Commission’s Head of Corporate Communications, Kayode Adegoke, NIMC reiterated that NIN enrolment is free and unauthorized fees imposed by staff or partners will not be tolerated.

NIMC Identifies Websites Harvesting Nigerians’ Data Illegally

The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has flagged five websites accused of harvesting Nigerians’ data fraudulently.

This development follows a recent alert by Paradigm Initiative about websites allegedly selling sensitive data, including National Identification Number (NIN), Bank Verification Number (BVN), and International Passport information.

In a statement issued on Saturday, NIMC’s Head of Corporate Communications, Kayode Adegoke, urged the public to avoid engaging with these websites and to be cautious about sharing personal information.

“NIMC urges the public to disregard any claims or services these websites offer and should not give their data as they are potentially fraudulent. Data provided by the public on such websites are gathered and stored to build the data services they illegally provide,” the statement read.

Contrary to claims by Paradigm Initiative, NIMC assured Nigerians that their sensitive data has not been compromised.

The Commission emphasized that it has implemented measures to further strengthen the NIN database.

“At this moment, the Commission assures the public that the data of Nigerians has not been compromised. The Commission has not authorized any website or entity to sell or misuse the National Identification Number (NIN) or other identities stated in the report,” Adegoke added.

The Commission highlighted its commitment to safeguarding the national database against cyber threats, maintaining that its infrastructure complies with the ISO 27001:2013 Information Security Management System Standard.

This compliance is reaffirmed through annual recertifications and adherence to the Nigerian Data Protection Law.

NIMC also advised Nigerians to be cautious of unauthorized and phishing sites, which pose significant risks of data harvesting and potential misuse.

The Commission reiterated its dedication to ethical data protection practices, in line with federal government directives and data privacy regulations.

Further, NIMC is collaborating with security agencies to identify and prosecute individuals posing as online vendors involved in illegal activities.

“NIMC urges the public to remain vigilant against false information and rely on verified sources for accurate updates. The Commission remains committed to providing secure and reliable identity management and upholding the highest level of security for systems and databases, which are critical national assets,” the statement concluded.

The Commission reassured Nigerians of its continued efforts to ensure the security and integrity of their personal data, urging them to stay informed through official channels.

FG Aims to Enroll 200 Million Citizens in NIN by 2025

The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has set an ambitious goal of enrolling 200 million Nigerians in the National Identification Number (NIN) system by 2025.

This announcement was made by Kayode Adegoke, the Head of Corporate Communications at NIMC, during an interview on X Space on Sunday.

Adegoke revealed that over 105 million NINs have been issued to Nigerians and legal residents to date. He expressed confidence that the commission would meet its target within the next one or two years, emphasizing the importance of universal enrollment.

To achieve this goal, an additional 95 million Nigerians need to register for their NINs. The NIN serves as a unique identifier for each citizen and has become integral to various government initiatives aimed at enhancing security, governance, and service delivery.

Adegoke highlighted recent improvements in the enrollment process, including the development of a self-service platform for modifications.

This platform allows individuals to update their information, such as names, dates of birth, and contact details, from anywhere using smartphones or computers.

In a bid to enhance the NIN system, NIMC has renewed its collaboration with IDEMIA Smart Identity, a firm specializing in cryptographic and biometric technologies.

The upgraded system will support 1 million identity verification searches per day, catering to the entire Nigerian population.

IDEMIA stated that NIMC’s efforts align with the United Nations’ sustainable development goals, particularly the objective of providing legal identity for all by 2030.

With these advancements, Nigeria is poised to strengthen its identity management infrastructure and improve service delivery to its citizens.

FG Relocates NIMC to Ministry of Interior

The Federal Government has decided to relocate the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) from the Ministry of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy to the Ministry of Interior.

This move aims to address the persistent challenges associated with National Identity Numbers (NIN), which are a crucial requirement for obtaining International Passports and other travel documents.

Under the previous administration, NIMC had partnered with the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to link NIN with Subscriber Identity Modules (SIM) to combat issues like kidnapping, banditry, and terrorism.

Remarkably, over 100 million Nigerians successfully linked their NIN with their SIM within a span of three years.Sources in Abuja revealed that the process of transferring NIMC to the Ministry of Interior is being expedited, aligning with President Bola Tinubu’s directive to eliminate obstacles hindering the acquisition of NIN and Passports.

A source familiar with NIMC operations emphasized that the Ministry of Interior has historically been the natural home for NIMC and lamented that the NIN-related problems could have been resolved sooner with technological innovation, were it not for bureaucratic tendencies centered around contract awards.

The Head of Corporate Communications at NIMC, Kayode Adegoke, confirmed the relocation, stating, “Yes, we have been moved.”

Adegoke also acknowledged the delays in issuing NINs, particularly for those needing corrections in birth dates or name sequences, but reassured that NIMC is launching a mobile application to address these issues.

He added, “We are introducing several innovations to tackle the problems. Nigerians will soon be able to request changes to their personal information online and receive real-time responses.”

Regarding concerns about fraudulent activities exploiting NIN-related problems, Adegoke dismissed such claims, asserting that these individuals were not associated with NIMC.Meanwhile, the Nigeria Immigration Service is deploying additional personnel to its frontline desks across the country to meet the two-week deadline set by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo.

The Minister had urged the Service to clear the backlog of over 200,000 Passport applications, and within just five days, over 55,000 applications have already been processed.

The Nigeria Immigration Service emphasized its commitment to meeting the deadline, with personnel working tirelessly, even during weekends.

The Acting Comptroller General, Mrs. Wura-Ola Adepoju, has been proactive in this endeavor, ensuring that all facilities and equipment are operating efficiently to expedite the Passport issuance process.

NIN-SIM Linkage : FG Bars Calls On Unlinked Phone Lines

TECHDIGEST – Beginning today, April 4, 2022, the federal government has directed telecom operators (telcos) to bar all outgoing calls on unlinked phone lines.

Phone users who failed to meet the March 31 deadline to link their National Identification Number (NIN) to the Subscriber Identification Module (SIM) in their phones will experience a connectivity blackout as government pushes to have only identifiable people access the national network.

In a statement signed jointly by Director, Public Affairs, Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Dr. Ike Adinde and Head of Corporate Communications, National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), Mr. Kayode Adegoke, the governmrnt revealed that at the end of the NIN-SIM linkage deadline, “over 125 million SIMs have had their NINs submitted for immediate linkage, verification and authentication. Similarly, the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has issued over 78 Million unique NINs till date.”

According to the statement, “President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the implementation of the policy with effect from the 4th of April, 2022. Consequently, the federal government has directed all telcos to strictly enforce the policy on all SIMs issued (existing and new) in Nigeria.
“Outgoing calls will subsequently be barred for telephone lines that have not complied with the NIN-SIM linkage Policy from the 4th of April, 2022.”
READ THE FULL STATEMENT BELOW.
On behalf of the Federal Government, the Honourable Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Professor Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami, has commended Nigerians and Legal Residents for their support during the exercise to link National Identification Number (NIN) to the Subscriber Identification Module (SIM). As of date, over 125 Million SIMs have had their NINs submitted for immediate linkage, verification and authentication. Similarly, the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has issued over 78 Million unique NINs till date.
It would be recalled that President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, gave the directive for the implementation and commencement of the exercise in December 2020, as part of the administration’s security and social policies. The deadlines for the NIN-SIM linkage has been extended on multiple occasions to allow Nigerians to freely comply with the Policy. The FG also took into consideration the passionate appeals by several bodies – Association of Licensed Telecoms Operators of Nigeria (ALTON), Civil Societies, Professional Bodies and a host of others – for the extension of the deadlines in the past.
Accordingly, Mr. President graciously approved the many requests to extend deadlines for the NIN-SIM linkage. At this point however, Government has determined that the NIN-SIM Policy implementation can proceed, as machinery has already been put in place to ensure compliance by citizens and legal residents. The implementation impacts on Government’s strategic planning, particularly in the areas of security and socio-economic projections.
President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the implementation of the Policy with effect from the 4th of April, 2022. Consequently, the Federal Government has directed all Telcos to strictly enforce the Policy on all SIMs issued (existing and new) in Nigeria. Outgoing calls will subsequently be barred for telephone lines that have not complied with the NIN-SIM linkage Policy from the 4th of April, 2022. Subscribers of such lines are hereby advised to link their SIMs to their NINs before the Telcos can lift the restriction on their lines. Affected individuals are hereby advised to register for their NINs at designated centers and thereafter link the NINs to their SIMs through the channels provided by NIMC and the Telcos, including the NIMC mobile App.
Professor Pantami specially appreciates President Muhammadu Buhari (GCFR) for his tremendous support. He also commends the Executive Vice-Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Prof. Umar Garba Dambatta, the Director-General/Chief Executive Officer of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), Engr. Aliyu Azeez Abubakar along with their Management and Staff, as well as other notable bodies whose efforts have seen to the monumental success of the exercise. The Minister also extends his thanks to the telecommunication operators for their support towards the success recorded.
The Honourable Minister also emphasized that enrolment for the NIN is a continuous exercise and NIN is a precondition for service in Telcos, banks, Nigerian Immigration Service, and for several other government services. He also encouraged Nigerians and legal residents to visit NIN registration centers for the enrollment and issuance of valid NINs.
