Metaverse: What Does the Future Holds for VR and Online Interactions?

By Fom Gyem

The concept of the metaverse is a fascinating and rapidly evolving space that represents the next significant leap in the evolution of the internet. It’s envisioned as a fully immersive, digital universe where users can interact with a computer-generated environment and other users.

In the ever-expanding cosmos of technological innovation, one concept stands as a beacon of boundless potential and transformative power: the metaverse. It emerges as a nexus where the digital and physical realms intertwine, offering an immersive tapestry where human imagination knows no bounds. As this digital odyssey unfolds, its ripples cascade across the fabric of society and industry, reshaping the very fabric of human experience.

At its essence, the metaverse embodies the allure of exploration, beckoning adventurers to traverse the threshold between reality and virtuality. Within this expansive digital frontier, users are invited to immerse themselves in a realm where the laws of physics yield to the whims of imagination. It is a realm where the ordinary becomes extraordinary, where dreams are crafted from pixels, and where the boundaries between the tangible and intangible blur into obscurity.

In the quest to unlock the mysteries of the metaverse, a cadre of visionaries and trailblazers have emerged, each wielding the tools of technology to sculpt a new world. Meta Platforms, Microsoft, Apple, Google, and Niantic stand at the vanguard, their innovative spirit propelling humanity into uncharted territory. Through their visionary endeavours in virtual reality, augmented reality, and mixed reality, they forge the pathways that lead to a future where the metaverse becomes an integral part of our daily lives.

While the metaverse initially emerges on the horizon of gaming, its tendrils extend far beyond the realm of entertainment. Social interactions blossom within its digital confines, weaving a tapestry of connection and community that transcends physical boundaries. Commerce thrives as virtual marketplaces pulsate with the energy of entrepreneurial spirit, offering a playground for innovation and economic growth. In the realm of education, immersive learning environments ignite the flames of curiosity, transforming the way knowledge is acquired and shared.

The metaverse lurks in the narrow passageways of business and industry, offering a revolution in the manner that transactions are carried out. Businesses may create virtual copies of real-world systems and items by integrating digital twin technology, which opens up new possibilities for real-time monitoring and improvement. While manufacturers use virtual prototypes to transform manufacturing processes, urban planners use digital threads to test and visualize cityscapes.

The metaverse’s lifeblood emerges from technological wonders amidst the turbulent seas of invention. This digital structure is constructed using a combination of blockchain technology, cryptocurrencies, augmented reality, virtual reality, and artificial intelligence. Artificial intelligence (AI)–powered virtual worlds give the digital world vitality by dynamically changing to suit the preferences of their users. The boundaries between reality and imagination are blurred by augmented reality spectacles, which provide views into parallel universes.

Metaverse invites mankind with promises of unimaginable wealth and success in the crucible of economic opportunity. Virtual economies are growing, full of innovation and enterprise. In the digital sphere, intellectual property rights are like cash that are exchanged in a frenzy of invention and creation. However, despite the abundance, there is a risk of environmental deterioration as the metaverse’s infrastructure depletes the planet’s resources.

Glancing about, the metaverse offers glimpses of a bold new world amid the sacred halls of academics and the health sector. Student’s curiosity and spirit of exploration are kindled in them by immersive learning environments, which act as a knowledge crucible. As it bridges the gap between patients and caregivers over great distances, telemedicine appears as a ray of hope. A new dawn is about to dawn, and mankind is prepared to set off on a journey into the unknown in this world of boundless possibilities.

Humanity is embarking on an exploration through the metaverse that is full of possibility and uncertainty, as well as danger and opportunity. We are carried along by the winds of invention, floating in a vast ocean of opportunity. One thing, however, never changes despite the unpredictable waves: the metaverse is a journey, not just a destination, into the recesses of human imagination, where reality is nothing more than a transient illusion and dreams are constructed from strands of code. The metaverse invites us to boldly go where no one has gone before, to forge our path, and to weave our destiny into this gigantic fabric of existence.

Experts predict that the metaverse could generate up to $5 trillion in value by 2030. It’s expected to be a space where the physical and digital worlds blur, creating new opportunities for interaction and business. The metaverse is not just about escaping reality but augmenting it with virtual content that enhances our daily lives.

In conclusion, the metaverse holds the promise of a new era of digital interaction, with profound implications for virtually every aspect of our lives.

As technology continues to advance, the boundaries between the physical and virtual worlds are likely to become increasingly seamless, heralding a future where our online and offline experiences are deeply interconnected. The companies that are currently leading the development of the metaverse are laying the groundwork for what could be the next significant chapter in human connectivity and interaction.

TECHDIGEST– Instagram has unveiled a series of updates designed to give users greater control over their content consumption and offer transparency to creators. The new features include an “Interested” button for recommended posts, allowing users to indicate their preferences.

Additionally, Instagram is testing transparency notifications to inform creators about potential limitations on the reach of their content, such as watermarked Reels. The company aims to enhance its understanding of its algorithms and ranking processes, addressing concerns related to shadowbanning. These efforts align with Instagram’s commitment to supporting creators and fostering user engagement.

READALSO: New Technology Generates Electricity from Humidity in Air

Last year, Instagram made changes to its ranking system, prioritizing the distribution of original content over reposted content in the Reels tab and feed. This update has proven successful, as Meta reported a growth of over 24% in Instagram usage since the introduction of AI-powered content recommendations.

With these recent updates, Instagram aims to empower users, support creators, and provide greater transparency into its algorithms and content ranking processes.

WEF holds first metaverse meeting

TECHDIGEST – The World Economic Forum is having two meetings, one taking place in-person in Davos, the other in the metaverse.

According to Telecoms.com, the corporate lobby group on Tuesday launched a prototype of its Global Collaboration Village, giving 80 of its partner organisations a virtual space in which to, in WEF’s words, “take action on the world’s most pressing challenges.”

It runs on Microsoft’s Mesh mixed reality platform, and consists of three separate areas. First and foremost is the virtual congress centre: a virtual auditorium in which to attend conferences, bilateral meetings and workshops.

Then there are the collaborative centres, offering virtual collaboration spaces for smaller-scale, more in-depth meetings. Finally, there are the stakeholder campuses, essentially giving partners a virtual exhibition stand at which they can host meetings with other members.

“With the Global Collaboration Village, we are creating the first public purpose-oriented application of the metaverse technology, building a true global village in the virtual space,” said WEF chairman Klaus Schwab, in a statement. “Supported by a unique range of partners from the public and private sectors, the Village will use the frontier capabilities of the metaverse to find solutions for addressing the big issues of our time in a more open, inclusive and sustained way.”

READ ALSO: How CBN’s Cash Policy is Promoting e-Naira

Until now, most metaverse announcements have been pitched firmly at ‘the youth’, offering them a new means of socialising, consuming content, interacting with their favouring brands, and even meeting celebrities, albeit digital versions of them. This though, strikes a far more grown-up tone and, frankly, it is a struggle to envision how it will work.

Will hundreds of important decision makers – who have spent their entire careers putting on grey suits and going to meetings, having their calls screened and diaries managed by executive assistants – make a coordinated and sustained effort to learn how to control a 3D avatar of themselves using a headset and hand controllers, and then use those to attend productive virtual meetings? Or will they ‘attend’ via a PC or smartphone, thus reducing the Global Collaboration Village to little more than a snazzy Teams meeting?

According to a New York Post article from last year, annual WEF membership fees start at $62,000 and run to as much as $620,000 for a fancy one. On top of that, a ticket for the Davos get-together is $29,000. Is WEF really about to risk that cash-cow by making the Global Collaboration Village anything more than a slightly gimmicky sideshow?

WEF insists it’s a big believer in the metaverse concept though and accompanied the launch with two briefing papers. One of them emphasises the importance of interoperability – enabling users to move between the physical and digital world with their relevant data, digital assets and identities – while the other focuses on consumer applications, foundational technologies and pathways to economic value and growth.

WEF reckons that even though the metaverse’s precise definition is still being debated, the sector will be worth $800bn in 2024.

“The metaverse is the next version of the Internet and it is critical that it’s built by all, and for all,” said Cathy Li, WEF’s head of media, entertainment, and sport. “These two outputs reflect premier work on the metaverse involving such an extensive set of stakeholders and leaders, demonstrating the unique value of public-private partnership in metaverse development.”

SinVerse’s AI integration: A revolutionary step forward in the Metaverse and Web-3 gaming

TECHDIGEST – SinVerse, the leading decentralized metaverse platform, has made history by becoming the first metaverse to fully implement artificial intelligence (AI) technology. The integration of AI allows for a truly immersive and dynamic virtual experience, with the potential to revolutionize the way we interact with and utilize virtual worlds.

According to Rutherford Atayobo, chief operations officer and co-founder of SinVerse, “We are excited to be at the forefront of innovation in the metaverse and web-3 gaming space. The integration of AI technology takes SinVerse to the next level and sets the stage for a new era of virtual experiences. Our goal is to make SIN token, our native token, more valuable and useful for the community by providing more utilities and use cases for it.”

One of the key features of SinVerse’s AI integration is its use in combating cheating in the platform’s games. The platform’s AI-powered NPCs (non-player characters) are able to detect and prevent cheating, making for a fairer and more enjoyable gaming experience for all players. This is particularly notable in the game “GTA on the blockchain,” which is one of the most popular games on the SinVerse platform.

Furthermore, the platform has recently registered the SinVerse.AI domain name, suggesting that there may be future partnerships coming in the field of AI technology. SinVerse’s partnership with VAIOT, a company that offers blockchain based AI solutions, will enable development of “meta agreements” for in-game businesses, allowing users to create and operate their own businesses using NFT (non-fungible token) business licenses. This feature is set to open up a whole new world of possibilities for in-game economies and player-driven commerce, driving more utility for the SIN token.

READ ALSO: NITDA Empowers Smart Farmers with Materials

SinVerse’s commitment to innovation and the integration of cutting-edge technologies sets it apart in the metaverse and web-3 gaming space. The platform’s use of AI to combat cheating and facilitate in-game businesses, combined with the potential for future partnerships in the field, sets the stage for a new era of virtual experiences and a brighter future for the SIN token. With this step SinVerse is positioning itself as a market leader, and a company to watch in the blockchain and AI space.

Interpol Sets Up its Own Global Police Metaverse

TECH DIGEST- Interpol’s Executive Director of Technology and Innovation, Madan Oberoi, stated that “not all acts that are criminalized” offline “are considered crimes when committed in the virtual world.” Oberoi stressed the importance of cutting off “future criminal markets before they are fully formed.”

Interpol has presented the first metaverse for law enforcement. Because some crimes committed in the physical world are not yet regulated in the virtual world, the organization determines that criminals are already taking advantage of the relative anarchy.

Interpol announced the platform’s introduction on Thursday during its 90th General Assembly in New Delhi. The international police body explained in a statement published on its website that users of the new metaverse can take a tour of a virtual re-creation of the Interpol General Secretariat headquarters in Lyon, France, interact with other officers, and take training courses in forensic investigation, among other policing capabilities.

READALSO: Buhari Confers ‘Digital Innovation Award’ on Pantami

The Metaverse is based on the concept of the internet growing into a single, immersive virtual realm, accessible to users via virtual or altered reality headsets.

Several firms, like Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta, which has been creating its own platform dubbed Horizon Worlds, have already sought to construct their own version of this online world.

“Criminals are already starting to exploit the Metaverse,” Interpol warned in Thursday’s statement. The organization cooperates with the World Economic Forum, Meta and Microsoft in preparing to tackle crime in the newly emerging spaces.

Interpol says that as the number of Metaverse users grows, so too will the list of possible crimes, which will potentially include violations such as data theft, money laundering, financial fraud, counterfeiting, ransomware, phishing and even sexual assault and harassment.

Seven Tech Trends To Look Out For In 2023

By Maryam Na’Allah Umar Baba

TECHDIGEST – The year 2022 is drawing to a close, leaving us to wonder what the future holds for us. Several technological advancements have occurred in the past few years, including the introduction of 5G and the Internet of Things, and a number of other ground-breaking innovations were developed during the Covid era, particularly in the field of information technology. Examples of such technologies: A few of these include online shopping, robot deliveries, digital and contactless payments, and telehealth services.

The significant role that technology has played throughout history is in the advancement of artificial intelligence, its development, and its emergence and improvement

In my capacity as a technology enthusiast and a writer, I cannot help but wonder what modern technology innovations will emerge in the future that will enhance and enhance our current capabilities in the future. In light of this, here are seven technology trends that may or may not influence 2023.

1. From smart assistants like Siri to marketing chatbots, artificial intelligence has continued to evolve and develop since its emergence. The use of artificial intelligence has proven to be quite useful and useful in the collection of data that are too large for humans to oversee. From a futuristic point of view, AI still has a long way to go in improving life quality, augmenting work forces, and, more importantly, in generating new forms of entertainment and business.

2. Blockchain technology: Currently used primarily in the financial sector, it is expected to be applied in other sectors in the future such as healthcare, government, and education. Blockchain may also be used to store non-financial data, like medical records, with the assistance of artificial intelligence. Providing healthcare in this manner could improve the security and reliability of delivery while making it more affordable as well. The application of blockchain technology has the potential to revolutionize the way in which we view digital ownership and fuel a boom among consumers. Several blockchain development companies in Nigeria, including Mobirevo and Intelia, have already incorporated them into their systems.

3. Metaverse (Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality) : This consists of both virtual and augmented reality, or AR/VR. Virtual reality is currently a prominent part of the gaming industry, but it is expected to have a significant impact on other industries as well. The healthcare industry, education and transportation, architecture, and engineering to name a few. As VR and AR develop, they will have the potential to reshape organizations and even blur the lines between virtual and real environments. There may be a better method for holding meetings than Zoom meeting through virtual or augmented reality. An example of this type of future can be seen in the first few minutes of the 2014 film ‘The Kingsman’. Additionally, Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) technologies are expected to become more accessible by 2023 due to a reduction in their prices. These technologies would not only be used in the entertainment industry but also in the business and educational sectors.

READ ALSO: GITEX 2022: From wearable payment tech to Saudi disruptors, here are the top things to see at Dubai’s Fintech Surge 2022

4. Wifi-6 and 5G : By introducing this technology, we can expect to see a meaningful change in how Wi-Fi is used for the better in the future, as it can theoretically provide faster speeds when compared with the previous generation of WiFi. It is capable of reaching speeds of up to 9.6 Gbps through its wireless connection. Affordability is also expected to be a factor in its development. 5G and Wi-Fi 6 have been designed to work together seamlessly, and the wireless industry appears to be headed towards a future in which devices can roam securely and seamlessly across all types of wireless networks.

5. Implantation of bionic ears: sometimes referred to as cochlear implants, these implants are currently used by adults and are anticipated to be used by children in the near future. The implementation of bionic ears is expected to take place by 2023. Aside from providing hearing aids, it is expected that the implant will enable hearing impaired individuals to use headphones and other listening devices more easily. Hearing aid implants would undoubtedly prove to be an effective means of reducing the stigma associated with those who are deaf or hard of hearing.

6. In recent years, the importance of sustainability has become increasingly apparent in our world. Energy-efficient and environmentally friendly technologies are a priority across all industries. For a long time, technological advancements have enabled higher levels of productivity and efficiency. The use of renewable energy sources such as solar power has reduced the cost of electricity for those who use it and has been beneficial for the environment. As we move forward, it is imperative to place sustainable technologies in the spotlight in order to ensure environmentally sustainable employment.

7. Quantum computing: According to Mckinsey, Quantum computing, ‘is an emerging technology that uses the laws of quantum mechanics to produce exponentially higher performance for certain types of calculations, offers the possibility of major breakthroughs across sectors’. There is a possibility that quantum computing may play a decisive role in the solution of the climate crisis. Certainly, a technology that global companies and governments could make use of.

As technology continues to evolve in ways that are beyond our comprehension, we cannot yet determine the limit of its application. Moreover, it is interesting to note that the current industrial revolution we are experiencing has produced a wide range of advanced technologies that have had a profound effect upon several industries in our world and are continuing to do so.

Finally, as change is constant and time waits for no one, in order for Nigeria to benefit from these trends, national associations such as Nigeria VRARA, NCAIR, and even the Nigerian government should take advantage of them. Specifically, the Nigerian government would benefit from this initiative since it could pave the way for more accessible and affordable education for the troubled education system.
