TECHDIGEST– Director General, National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), Kashifu Inuwa, has said that his Agency is working with other stakeholders towards creating an irreversible transformative change in the way people live and work in the country, especially with the widespread of evolution and adoption of the 4th Industrial Revolution globally.

Inuwa said this at the 7th College of Fellows Roundtable Symposium of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), held in Abuja.

Represented by the Director IT Infrastructure Solutions Department, Dr Usman Gambo Abdullahi, Inuwa noted that 4th Industrial Revolution has created opportunities for most existing Engineers and people to stand out in their respective fields, with a view to becoming drivers of innovation, creating new inventions to press global challenges.

“In the past decade, as large projects require more companies and stakeholders to work together across time zones around the world, new ways of workings are demanding more seamless connections and faster access to real time information, that ushered in the next significant transformation which is cloud”.

“NITDA, as the nations apex I T regulatory body, believed that it will be difficult for Nigerians to catch up with its developmental pursuit without developing engineering and technology professions,” he said.

He added that, “Our Scientists, Engineers and Technologists are critical to solving our societal problems and challenges.

“The focus of Engineering is the making of things and work efficiently and effectively by applying the theories and principles of science and mathematics to research and develop economic solutions to technical problems” he maintained.

Inuwa also averred the role of Engineers as critical to the well being of human existence, cognizance of their innovative, maintaining of products and system equipment, thereby making a country habitable for the citizenry.
He also commended the resilience of Engineers, Architects and the construction industries in the last 41 years in changing the narrative towards attaining the accelerated Digitally Transformed sector.

“It started with Digitalisation, which is transition from paper drawings and analogue processes to digital tools and later computer system designs.

“As Digitalisation was ongoing, Architects encountered increasingly complex design problems, such as global growing population, urbanization and climate change”, he noted.
Inuwa admonished participants the imperative of keying into the current realities of the Digitalisation agenda, as the process needs holistic evaluation and approach by relevant actors, so as to make it more beneficial to the future.
“On the Digitalisation agenda, the National Digital Economy Policy and Strategy (NDEPS) has been strategically set towards transforming the country into a leading Digital Economy; providing quality life and digital economies for all. And also, a mission of building a nation where digital innovation and entrepreneurship will be used to create value and prosperity for all,” he added.

The NITDA Boss enumerated eight pillars on which the policy/strategy is anchored, which are; Developmental Regulation, Digital Literacy and Skills, Solid Infrastructure, Service Infrastructure. Other pillars are Digital Services Development and Prevention, Soft Infrastructure, Digital Society and Emerging Technologies and lastly Indigenous Content Development and Adoption.

He added that, “these pillars apply to Engineering sector and every other sector in Nigeria. Digital Technology is at the heart of the engineering sectors, regulations and Engineering Literacy and Skills should be driven by digital technology.”

On the challenges the Engineering sector may face, Inuwa identify the demand for new skills in place, for the 4th Industrial Revolution, as some jobs including Engineering will disappear and new ones will emerge.

He urged the Enginners to constantly update themselves with new trends such as Big Data, Internet of Things, Artificial Intelligence, as the future remains unpredictable, as digitalisation has provided businesses and organisations with a better view of what the future could look like, with the endless possibilities offered by technology.

The DG was amongst recipients of NSE Honorary Awards conferred on selected individuals and corporate bodies, for their contribution to the development of the highest Engineering regulatory body in the country.

TECHDIGEST – Former President Dr. Goodluck Jonathan has urged Nigerian engineers to key into the prospects of the digital revolution by innovating competitively to properly position the nation and the African continent to exploit the opportunities being offered by the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

The former President noted that the current industrial revolution characterized by the dominance of the Internet and a fusion of technologies is reshaping and changing the world at a fast rate.
He said that Africa cannot afford to miss out as it did in the previous technological revolutions.

Dr. Jonathan, who stated this during weekend at the investiture of Engr. Tasiu Sa’ad Gidari-Wudil as the 33rd President of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), also charged engineers to take the lead in the push for sustainable growth and development.

Describing engineering as the foundation for development, technological advancement and national transformation, the former President further stated that the nation has vast natural endowments to support the development of alternative and renewable energy sources.

He said: “I believe that our engineers hold the key to our economic and technological advancement, be it in the prevailing information technology and knowledge industry or in the conventional brick and mortar infrastructural development. Our engineers should take the lead in the push for sustainable growth in the nation’s development impetus.

“ I made the point at the last event of NSE that the frequent collapse of buildings in the country does not speak well of the integrity and quality of our engineering, and this is happening at a time when many developing countries can boast of several secure skyscrapers standing above 100 floors.

“Having produced accomplished engineers for this long as an independent nation, we should be aiming to take the lead in the building of quality roads, rail, and other civil infrastructural development in the country.

“Ours is a nation with enormous power challenges. We need relevant engineering and creative engineers not only to revamp and boost the power supply but also to be able to diversify our power infrastructure. We need to build and consolidate a good energy mix that is required to reinvigorate the nation’s economy.

“If we diligently apply ourselves to developing alternative and renewable energy sources, we will become a force to be reckoned with in this regard, considering that we have abundant all-year-round sunshine, several kilometres of ocean coastline and different bodies of water with significant waves, currents and wind.

“These are all-natural endowments that require good engineering to make our country a champion in the development of hydro, solar and wind energy infrastructure, all of which are renewable sources.

“If our universities should serve as hubs for technological innovation and national transformation, the society of engineers should be ready to play a role to ensure that engineering is recalibrated to provide transformative solutions to the challenges of our society.

“To remain a progressive nation, we should be better positioned to deploy the capacity and ingenuity of our workforce, especially in science and technology, to innovate and improve our society.”

TECH DIGEST – The Director General of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), Mallam Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi, has reiterated that emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence and Robotics are going to power the fourth industrial revolution.

He said this while delivering a goodwill message at the National Engineering Conference and Annual General Meeting organised by Nigerian Society of Engineers, (NSE), held at the International Conference Centre, ICC, Abuja.

This year’s conference was themed: “Engineering Education and Lifelong Learning Opportunities for Sustainable Development”.

Inuwa Abdullahi, while speaking further, hinted that all the previous industrial revolutions were powered by engineers and now that we are at the verge of the fourth industrial revolution makes the conference even more timely.

He noted that Africa, as a continent, lost out in the first, second and third industrial revolutions but now it is at the verge of the Fourth Industrial Revolution which is going to be powered by Artificial Intelligence, Augmentive Reality and other technologies to change the way of work.

“Emerging technologies such as, artificial intelligence and robotics are changing the way we design, plan and execute engineering projects,” he added.

The president of NSE, Engr. Mohammed Babagana, while speaking earlier appreciated the members of the Organising Committee for a job well done, despite the limited time.

He however used the opportunity to emphasize the importance of Engineering in the development of any nation.

“Engineering is development, development is engineering and engineering is life,” he added.

TECH DIGEST – Investment One Financial Services Limited has made three more of its investment funds available on its trending mobile investment app – Ziing.

The investment funds are Vantage Dollar Fund (VDF), Vantage Equity Income Fund (VEIF) and Vantage Balanced Fund (VBF).

The Group, which boasts of at least eight thriving subsidiaries, earlier in the year, launched its Mutual Fund on the Ziing App.

Ziing is an app powered by Investment One Financial Services to ease savings, investments and reduce financial friction. The App was launched to the public more than one year ago, with about three features which are zSave, zPlan and Fixed Income.

Speaking on the new initiative, the Group Managing /Chief Executive Officer, Investment One Financial Services, Nicholas Nyamali, said the purpose was to make available more investment opportunities for investors home and abroad.

He disclosed that the App has helped thousands of Nigerians save hundreds of millions of naira and become more investment savvy.

‘’Within one year of launch, Ziing has had over 10,000 downloads on Android and IOS devices. Our plan for Ziing is to provide more investment opportunities and make the platform truly ‘amaziing’ for users,” he said.

He said that all the funds are registered by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

Nyamali added that the Vantage Dollar Fund, being an open-ended Unit Trust Scheme, seeks to provide investors with bias for Dollar denominated securities access to such securities, which ordinarily would be inaccessible to them by virtue of the minimum amount typically required to make such investments. It helps investors to invest primarily in Corporate and Sovereign Eurobonds.

The Vantage Equity Income Fund has the objective of providing regular income and long term capital appreciation from investments in dividend paying and high quality equity instruments quoted on the NSE, where the issuers have an investment grade rating from a credit rating agency registered by SEC and fixed income securities approved by SEC.

Investment One explained that the Vantage Balanced Fund is a diversified and balanced fund designed to maximize long term capital growth and maintain regular income distribution.
